So if you hear a noise, get out and check immediately

glad it happened when it did I guess. Make sure you have the right lug nuts on there.

Wheel nuts and bolts have many different seats (where the nut touches the wheel). The 3 most common are acorn seat (conical), ball seat (radius), and mag shank seat.

All,

Where is a good place to buy lug nuts?
My Civic uses the acorn style and I'd like to buy some open ones to replace my full ones for when I run steel wheels on it...

I bought mine at Carquest

I was able to pound them out without taking the hub off

Need to synch them down more. Got them on enough to put the tire on and drive it into the Garage. Probably should do a rear axle rebuild and check the axles before I do anything else.

Studs are M12X1.25......Toyota sells them for about $3 each.....Lug nuts from them run about the same each. This is for stock application.

Man, The damage is a bummer! Esp. since its self inflicted.

I would definitly pull the axle shaft to seat the studs. There is no way to insure that they are seated properly installing them in place. I would hate to see more damage to the rig because of a short cut.You might check your wheel for excessive runout (bent) sometimes they bent in the coming off process ;). I would buy a torque wrench from a tool dealer like Snap-on or Matco as well as they're worth thier weight in gold.

Glad no one was hurt!

I plan on doing a rear axle rebuild and I have a Torque wrench. I put them on like that so I could get it into the garage and do it at my own pace. I wante to inspect the axle and make sure I don't have another problem brewing.

Sorry Romer-

Glad you are alright.

Luckily the 40 body is all straight forward body panels, you should be able to fix your rear quarter without too much effort. However, it may require a bit of cut and weld, or a good bit of filler otherwise.

I think it is a good idea to give everything a good look over, that kind of drama may have jacked with something else.

Glad you're okay.

I had that happen with a 64 Impala I had when I was 16 @ about 60 mph, front tire fell off and the drum shattered this dumped the single resorvor MC into the ditch I went and what a wild ride that was. This is one of the reasons I changed to a dual on my 69 FJ40.

Looks like you were lucky Ken but at least you had a good backup.

s*** i just did a read disk brake convert, im going to check mine!!

To re enforce the title, coming into town one day I heard a howl while letting off the gas. This noise went away under acceleration. Should have stopped, gotten out, and checked immediatly.....But didn't. Made it about a half mile further (entering downtown) when the rear end locked up. This sent my 40 into a slow spin. At 90* I was sure a roll was inevitable as the truck was seriously leaning. Luckily this was not the case. At 180* (backwards) I heard a loud bang and things began rolling again. My 40 puked its' driveshaft in two sections. After comming to a stop I got out and checked, finding the pinion nut had left its' assigned post. The ring then sucked the pinion into diff causing bad things.

So I am finally back on the road thanks to Treeroot for a drum and Wes for a shaft.

The backing plate needed a lot of pounding and the drum was bent a bit. A good drum would not fit right on the axle hub and would wobble slightly and rub the backing plate once a rotation. The bend in the hub was slight and I couldn't see it, but the new axle fixed me up.

Pounded out the steel and did a poor job with Bondo to make it look not as bad. Guess installing new qtr panels is in my future.

Drove it for an hour today with no issues except it was hot out.

Going, wheeling tomorrow, except I am going to take the Lexus, new Slee rear bumper and all.

And yes I torqued the lug nuts!

That's some scary sheit!

I've had a few wheels come loose over the years, but never lost one.

I think you should wear that dent proudly for a while, and maybe put off fixing it until you get a little more wheeling in. By the time your done, you may join the Hatfield school of bodywork. ;p
