Slider Idea, Need Input

I am still looking around at ideas and found a coupe pics posted of Landcruiserphil's rig. Check this out, just a simple section of tube that looks to be bolted directly to the rocker. I wonder how this is holding up?

Even with something tuck into the body like that
I will bet the house that you will get into the bottom of your doors in a matter no time
It also depends on how hard you use your truck
But, it is very easy to lean the bottom of the door areas into something with out even hitting the slider because they curve out quite a bit from the rocker

True, my truck already has damage on the pass doors from this. I wondered how he didn't get the rockers and just the doors.

I made my sliders for all of 50 bucks. If you have acess to a welder/grinder youre good to go.

Prove to me that you bought welded, bent and powder coated and they are as bad ass as a set of Metal Techs for that price.

Still lookin for proof and cost versus time....lets say 25 dollars an hour for labor as a ballpark

You can not really equate labor into it if you are doing it yourself
Your time is your time, that is why you do it yourself to save the extra added cost of say the metal tech sliders plus some of us really enjoy doing it ourselves as opposed to having it done for us
Is someones diy sliders going to be just as good looking as the MT sliders maybe not, but the big question is do they perform as well.
MY sliders have taken everything I can throw at them without issue, and I am sure they perform just as well as the metal techs IMO
Mind you I bought a kit for $300, I do not count my labor because it is what I wanted to do so it is irrelevant and my labor does not cost me anything in reality because I enjoy it and got satifaction from building something that has performed well which in my book is priceless
Some people prefer the bolt on and forget about it way like most people, and others prefer doing it their way
And there is nothing wrong with that .
Its $600 that did not come out of my pocket regardless of my time spent on them.

Where did you get your kit for $300 from?

I got it from Adam at 4X Innovations a few years ago IIRC it was $280-300 to my door
I believe it was the kit for the double cab taco which is about the same length as the bolt on 80 sliders he makes
These are what Adam recommended to me
It is the basic DOM tubing weld on kit w/o cat protection which is not something I am concerned about
I did have to make different legs for the front but it was all good
Dont get me wrong it was quite a bit of work but it was fun so it does not matter

Looks like they offer a kit for just the legs/cat protection for $200 plus freight. 4x Innovations: FJ80 Rock Slider Mounting Kit with Legs

This doesn't do me much good as I have plans for high clearance cats so that custom piece would be useless. The price is not bad though.

If you are moving the cats then you dont really need the protection
I plan on removing my cats sometime in the near future unless the trail does it for me first

I built a set for about $125. Spent more on the grade 8 bolts and paint than anything else. Maybe not as pretty as a commerical shops product, but after a few hits, who cares They survived the Con

I agree with the post about the cats. My cat protection is going to be storage in the garage. I'm going to remove them and add a spool piece

Dont really have to prove anything...... I paid 50 bucks for 3 1.5x3"x8' sticks of steel for the outriggers and main slider body and I had all the rest given to me. My time does not count and I would never powder coat something that is meant to be scratched since thats just a silly waste of $$.

If you wanna be really anal you could add the wire and electricity into the price i guess.

I better not post that my front and rear bumpers were absolutely free since I built them and used steel I already had lol.

I have one more idea before I just build some standard boring looking sliders. Instead of tube running the length of the truck what about a 3/16" piece of steel, either 90 degree or bent to hug the rocker? Seems like I could tuck it pretty high, just not sure if 3/16" steel would support weight of the truck? I used 1/4" on my bumper but I think the weight of 1/4" would be pretty high.

I think without a lot of gussets the outer side would just fold up into the body. You can bend 3/16 angle, or 1/4 for that matter, by hitting it with a small sledge.

for those quibbling about the cost of kits, i bought marlin sliders. they're $160 new (i bought from someone who was going ot put them on his truck and wrecked it instead for $125). nice cheap alternative to the expensive 80 series sliders (not that metal tech and slee aren't great products, but they are outside of my price range). i already had the welder and rattle can paint.

One good hard hit with 6000 lbs on top of it and that will fold or buckle right into your rockers
And that would or could create alot of damage

If you want something that tucks, could look into chopping the rocker panels...

Not to mention that would just catch a bunch of mud and dirt.

I think if there was a much better/ more creative way to build sliders someone would have done it already. Whats out there is simple, works, and looks pretty good to me.

Glad you're thinking out if the box though! I applaud those that want to create with their own two hands instead of whipping out the credit card.

You would be surprised how much a little bit of protection will do.

Watch and listen to the video. The ledge on the drivers side were the rail hits is about ~24" my cute little wont work rock rails are at 21" to the bottom. Vehicles with "real" slider were denied this line because "real" sliders hang down 2"+ lower then my set up and would hang up.

The rail tubes did dent from the impact on the video but they were designed to under hard impact. They have several dent in them but zero body damage. My set up is not for everybody but it works great for me.

Th rail set up has more clearance then a lot 80 with 37"s and real sliders.
