Should the front DS turn when going from AUTO hubs to Aisin hubs

Yesterday, I decided to swap out my AUTO hubs from Yota with some manual IFS Aisins. I used Replacing Toyota AUTO Hubs - ORN as a guide along with Jerod's write-up https://forum.ih8mud.com/79-95-toyo...ng-aisin-locking-hub-locking-hub-rebuild.html

My question is, should the front DS spin in 2wd? Because it is. I expect both to turn in 4wd. I know in cruisers, the front DS doesn't, but not sure if the AUTO linkage is different. The dials turn fine, but I want to test that I did it correctly. TIA.

if you have ADD it might, i think as long as the ADD system is working right the drive shaft should not turn, but i do not know that much about that system.
the bottom line is if you have manual hubs the drive shaft should not spin, if the hubs are on free wheel, or unlocked, and the shifter is in 2 wheel drive.

If you're talking about your 86 Runner, it shouldn't - and shouldn't have ADD. Are you sure that the hubs are unlocking?

With the hubs unlocked, the DS will spin if the t-case is engaged - spinning from being powered by the t-case.

With the t-case disengaged, the DS will spin if the hubs are locked - spinning from the tires spinning the axleshafts (or even one shaft) spinning the third member spinning the DS.

Try jacking up the front end and putting the t-case in neutral. Spin one and then the other tire to see if the driveshaft spins. You may find that one hub (or both) is not disengaging.

With everything in 2wd, and the hubs unlocked, try to turn the axle shafts, if either one does not turn, then you have a hub that's not unlocking. If they both turn, then make sure the driveshaft turns, if all 3 turn, then the DS turning that you are seeing is just parasitic friction, and isn't a big deal.

What Jerod said. Unlock everything and try to twist the driveshaft. If it moves, you are just dandy. If not, something is locked up and you might check your hub install. Pretty easy to install locked with the handle in the free position.

sorry to hijack but should the manual hubs be locked and driven on the street every so often, of course in 2 wheel drive . if so how often once a month ? thanks

Well, drat. With the tcase in 2wd and both open, the axles and DS wont move. When I installed the hubs, I put them in locked. Does it matter?

You bet it does. Easy fix.

  • Remove the six bolts holding on the cover. Pull out the cover/handle/clutch/spring assembly.
  • Rotate the clutch until it is close to the cover and the spring is compressed all the way.
  • Make sure the hub handle is in the free position.
  • Here is the tricky part. There are are two little tabs on either side of the clutch between two teeth. If you look at the hub body you will notice the grooves that the clutch slides in and out of. Two of those grooves are wider than the rest. Those little tabs need to be placed in those grooves. DO NOT TWIST THE COVER.

No. Not necessary.

If you don't use the 4wd very ofter, then I would lock them every few months just to turn the front diff over some so it stays oiled...

Do what Pappy said. it sounds like you have the hubs assembled wrong. Not a big deal.
