Should I buy a new 2018 or a 2016/2017 used LC?

Which of the following should I choose?

You are correct.

Yes you can. They will probably ask you for $499 to do so.

No it does not.

Is there a way to install this yourself? Or I guess it also needs to be programmed?

A little disappointed that my last 2 lesser trucks had remote start standard, and they you could leave it running and lock the doors. Like if you wanted to run into a gas station and grab a drink or something really quick.

Sorry I don't know those answers, I just remember seeing the $499 upcharge on dealer installed remote start systems on some of the ads when I was recently looking at new '18 cruisers.

Pretty sure you can install it yourself but you'll need access to Techstream to program it.

FWIW if my truck hadn't come with the remote start I would look at aftermarket options like Clifford/Python. I had one of those on my Acura and it was much better than the factory remote start
  • Range was about 1/2 mile (vs about 30 feet)
  • Vehicle runtime could be modified up to 20 or 30 minutes (vs a fixed 10 minutes)
  • Could trigger additional functions like rear/mirror defrosters
  • 2-way communication so you'd know if it actually started successfully, and would alert you when it shut down
  • Could enter the vehicle and drive away once I put the key in so long as I never touched the brake until it was in the Run position (vs shutting off as soon as you open a door)
  • 1/2-2/3 the cost (IIRC I spend $300 installed at Abt Electronics)

I agree, that sounds way better. Just not of fan of having the factory wiring harness chopped by some of the people I see at the local shops. Unless they have plug in play ones now.

Are you sure the aftermarket options allow for the truck to NOT shutoff when you open doors? I seem to recall reading about not being able to defeat that system even with an aftermarket system.

Nope, not sure. I know how it worked on my 2008 Acura MDX and it was far superior to what Acura sold.

Before buying one for an LC I would talk to the manufacturer to find out what features were/were not supported.

I wouldn't install a factory remote start. It has a terrible range and will turn off when you open the doors. An aftermarket remote start is remarkably better in every way, except the extra key fob. If you want it to remain running after you open the doors, your installer can do this at your request. I had the second to cheapest Viper remote start on a previous vehicle and it had about a 1 mile range (depending on terrain). The top model uses cell CDMA and your cell phone for pretty much unlimited range.

What if there is any electrical problem in the future and dealers could easily claim that the problem is due to the incorrect installation of remote starter (it's hard to prove wrong)?

I would think the remote start installer would be liable. If it's a reputable shop they'll take responsibility.

The local dealer who installs it may take the responsibility, but what if you relocate to a new town, that will create some problems as I can imagine.

I had the OEM remote start in my '11, and have a CompuStar aftermarket system in my '15 now. The CompuStar has all the advantages/features you mention, EXCEPT the engine does quit if I open any door (but not the rear hatch). The range of the OEM system is pathetic, but this one is plenty far enough for me, and I get feedback on the little display on the remote when the engine starts, with a countdown timer. There is an antenna stuck at the top of the windshield that took awhile to get used to.

There's a place near me that installs them, I may stop there and ask if the engine kill thing can be bypassed.
