Background: Went north to Crusin the woods and managed to slightly twist the short side rear axle shaft. Just enough that the e-locker sticks when it disengages and has a real hard time re-engaging.

So my plan/question, has anybody or does it sound like a reasonable idea to turn part of the splines off the axleshaft. Just enough that the sliding collar sits on about half way on the splines unlocked. This way it will still be keyed or whatever you want to call it when it locks, but it the axle twists or even breaks the collar won't have any interference and you might be able to remove the broken part to get the third out?

I'm going to try it tonight since I have a messed up shaft. Unless its a really bad idea.

Well? I'm in the same boat, did you try it?

I tried it and it worked great! I just used a flap wheel on the grinder, removed the twisted section and slowly took more material towards the outside off till it worked once again. Right now I'm looling for another shaft to turn in a lathe and use the old one as a spare.

Have you got the dimensions you are planning on shaving off? Apparently Landtank did one a while back and wasn't happy with it because it still had a slight bit of splines on the outside of the collar (I think). He has since measured again and reworked another shaft that has been working great in a test truck for some time. Maybe he can post the new drawing. ;)

Landtanks design.

I don't have any dimensions, it was a quick 'I want my locker to work again' sort of fix. When I pull my third to re-gear it I will be able to measure where I want to turn the splines on both sides of the collar. Should only be a month or so before I get to that point... But I will surely post up my measurements.

Measurements on this would be awesome. I really want to do this before I have to or can't.

Chris,
Did you have to provide Rick with the axle shaft and what does he charge for this service?

Bought a new OE shaft and Rick had machined. The one currently installed is new, so going to swap it and send to Rick for a spare, since its only a matter of time before carnage.

I think they're (AJIK/LandTank) charging cores, now, so I'm uncertain the expense.

I am certain that new, OE shafts are a friggin' fortune.

I have only snapped the long side to date but would like to do this for insurance sakes. I am a little hard on my rig....when in doubt, gas it! :D

Sweet!!!n That's what I'm hoping mine looks like this evening. One space to keep the collar from 'binding' in the unlocked position(mine is already ground there... And the precise one to re-alingn the splines to get the shaft out of the collar. Picture and dimension to come this evening :bounce::bounce2:

I have a stock set of rears and front for sale if anyone here is looking for a set.
