A few weeks ago I had about 3 different people call me to tell me I had a tail light out. Guess one perk of driving a unicorn around town is that people recognize you…..When inspecting it I noticed the RH rear taillight had a crack in it and the taillight was half full of water.

So I ordered a new one on partsourq to replace it. It was here in just a few days. This was my first time ordering parts from them and it was simple. I did learn a valuable lesson…….check your other tail light and do a walk around before ordering incase you need anything else. That way you don’t have to do it twice.

When I was installing the RH Taillight I noticed it had a little corrosion in the harness from the water being in there. Not terrible. Also noticed the LH taillight had condensation in it. Took it off and it was pretty wet in there. Also the So I got on partsourq and ordered a LH taillight, two new wiring harness (they had them so why not), and 4 new hinge covers for the rear.

Hello,

Taillights are not watertight. Their lip does not make a seal with the well.

A bead of silicone sealant over the lip helps to make a proper seal to keep dust and water out of the body well. Some cavity wax helps as well.

You can also disassemble the taillight to apply a small bead of silicone sealant between the lens and the main piece to make it watertight.

The only one that really even needed replacing was the cracked one. The new one looked so good and with parts available I figured why not. Harness’ were only $15 a piece so might as well do it while in there. Should be fine for another 25 yrs.

Im just glad little things like this is all I have to do on it! Ha everything else is already done.

Tonight we took shorte to Bellingraph Gardens and on the way home I noticed that both my instrument cluster backlighting, nor my running lights (rear) were all not working.

I’m going to check all the fuses tomorrow but was curious if there’s anything else I should check? I wasn’t able to find a whole lot of information online regarding the topic. What I did find says to check fuses, dimmer switch, and grounds.

Turn signals, hazard lights, parking brake, bright light indicator, etc all work. Side note: the instrument cluster has made strange noises in the past but it’s always been when it’s cold.

Tail lights illuminate when stopping, headlights work.

I can’t remember if the a/c vent controls had any backlighting but if so, then they are out as well.

I considered replacing battery but truck fires right up and the battery seems strong. 2023 battery.

Any advice would be much appreciated!!

I believe the tail lights share a fuse with another point.
Also, the indicators/wiper switches sometimes fail and act crazy, affecting other plugs related to the lights.

The noise during the cold is a bad speedo cable. You can do some WD-40, but I suggest you go new with the new speedo parts.

Thanks @wngrog and @Meshal for the replies. This is a great example why you use these guys! They are here to help not only during the purchase but afterwards as well. Much appreciated as I am not that mechanically inclined.

Thankfully this time it was nothing more than a 20 amp tail light fuse! Replaced fuse and back in business. Not sure what caused it to blow but thankful that was all it was.

No idea. I know my stereo guys did not do that and neither did I. Not sure if there is anything not stock that would need that.
