Here's a couple of links to good, quality builds by the same guy. The 'jumping ship' is a cruiser build by a jeep guy. Both are like yours - detail oriented and clean engineering work. Good info in both. Pirate ain't what it used to be years ago.

'Jeep guy'?!?!?!?!!?!

Thanks to posting links to my builds. I stuck the Lexus project on here a few weeks back. I was spending enough time on here researching this 'Land Cruiser' thing that I figured it was time.

Blender, My LX450/FZJ80 + FJ45esk + GM + Land Rover crazy concoction

The Hardcore section seemed like the best place. I try and get into the 80-series forum a bit for certain bits of information, but my build is far enough away from normal that most people just look at me funny. I've lurked here for tidbits of LC information for years.

The Willys section of Pirate is one of the best little corners in my opinion. There are lots of really interesting builds if you like old iron.

As I said on your thread, you've no idea the temptation it was to put a 300 tdi, 5 speed and Rover t-case into my '40 (I had them). I suspect I would have if the axles I got hadn't happened.... I'm so over brand loyalty in builds - build whatcha got, run what you brung. If I ever did get a D90 (bucket list truck) there is zero chance I'd leave the weak-sauce Rover axles in it and likely not even the motor.

That was, in a nutshell, the problem with Pirate - thinking outside of the box stopped with them 10 years ago. Even the suggestion that you could do with suspension what stretching the wheelbase does gets you burned in effigy. It's fine, they like soaps, here they like builds. It's like MTV, they used to play videos now they don't. Pirate used to be about 4x4s, now it's not.

Tell Sam hi in the willys section.... I'm seriously thinking about doing a modification of his twin triangle suspension on the rear of something I'm building next(ish).

I honestly think that certain parts of pirate are getting much better lately, there have been some rough patches for sure with the drama. I got a bit tired of it too. I decided to focus on making the Willys section what I think people really want....so far so good....

Suspension tech has come a long ways in the last few years. It has, and always will be, a compromise between all the different factors. Most people tend to latch onto hard and fast 'rules' and then forget that things like packaging, ground clearance, floor clearance, etc all have to be weighed in. Then we could talk about how most people tend to obsess about 'guessing' in regards to things like AS/AD/AL that are all basically based on a guess. I try and help where I can, but sometimes I don't even bother anymore.

Cheers

yeah, read the thread "FJ40 more questions then answers" and ask yourself if you think I'll ever forgive them. Quite honestly, it'll be a cold day in hell before I knowingly help anyone from that group on Pirate. And don't start with "it's just the '40 site" - on the Hummer forum, I asked if it were possible to put a duramax in a H3 - the answer was rather rude and blunt. Funny thing, it's been done.

This conversation is really done. Serge and the rest can shove that site squarely up their collective tailpipes. Pirate is just like AOL - they were useful until the children were allowed to play unsupervised; now, I dare you to trust anything anyone there says.

One thing - you have to be careful here too - the little girls on Pirate will whine to the management here if something bad is said about them here.

Going on, next post is more metal work.

I swear these doors - had I paid the $500 for some aqualus and divided that by the number of hours labor to make these about 50% of those.... I'd be making $10/hr. Oh well, for those curious the entire plan of this rig was practice for the Buick I've posted a couple times... this really is metalwork light comparatively.

so primer and paint the inside of the doors so they don't rust out again

woohoo, long, flat, thin metal welds

no warps! yay

more long welds and corners

so with a bit of hammer and dolly work it's close

I did say "close"

believe it or not this is really easy to get out when you metal finish... you're already putting heat in the weld with the grinding so you might as well put it to work to shrink it back flat

the trick is to be certain the sides are straight and the center isn't tin-canning

and I don't have grinding disks... forgot to get them today, oh well that's a good stopping point for tonight

Got 2 more rigs from the Seattle Cruiser Heads for Oct 29. I was about to hack the web site and rename it the Seattle Mall Cruisers. I guess I'll hold off a bit longer. :flipoff2:

When you got butt hurt over on Pirate because you were dealing with peoole who have and know how to build rock crawlers and desert cars and didn't want an opinion. I gave you my personal phone number and told you to call me. You brushed that off too. Face it, you want to put up a bunch of info you don't know s*** about, pass it off a gospel and have people put up that stupid clapping emoji. For the most part you got that here.
You can't drive up a 1998 rti ramp and gain s*** for street cred with folks that know whats what, you can't drive up a little grassy rise and pound the keyboard in success. I stayed out of it here till you kept trying to undermine respected people in the Cruiser world that happen to be on Pirate. Seriously man, you and your welds are clueless.

ah look, the folks I speak of - no matter what they say, the FJ40 works and that burns them more then absolutely anything else. Anyone can drive someone else's buggy. A 1998 ramp, lol.... cred, argue with the PNW4WD association about proper ramp use - it was theirs and simply did it for... get this... fun.

I'd love to take credit for making you look like chumps - after all, nothing you predicted came true - but you do it to yourselves... now go away.

ah, you're still here - do you really think that the crickets you hear on Pirate is because of my little thread buried over here on the internet? damn, I'm good but maybe it's time you realize that I'm one of thousands who think you folks simply aren't worth the drama.

While I've had tons of admirers who've seen my '40 in person - I've yet to meet anyone who defends Pirate... no one.

Part of tonight was getting doors

worth $380? probably not, but I'm sure Mace could find them for $100 in 10 wrecking yards in Vegas - but he's not telling so this will have to do... I'm simply going to spray them - they're for winter use only and they really simply need to match... maybe next summer I'll give them a once over but more likely I won't

and I got the other skin welded up.

I have been a part of the Land Cruiser Community for a long time. And will be long after you loose interest in yours.
I take full responsibility for ever getting tied up in this mess.
It's been clear to me exactly what I said in my post above. You have never been here to take any kind of advice. Any time someone challenges anything you just get defensive. That's fine. Enjoy.

ROFLMAO - you really are special.

$40 for a mask or tens of thousands in potential medical costs? Don't try to argue medical costs with me, that's one debate you'll lose.

It took a great, strong woman to make me use more safety in the garage as well, she's right. The nose blow test alone shows the massive variance - even only 10 minutes of cutting / grinding.

Not sure if you're being sarcastic or defensive, but in text it comes across as defensive.

Jus' sayin

Made me think - you're taking experience with low, fast cars and working on/helping with Bonneville cars as your expertise in suspension..... how well would it be taken if a guy who builds only rock crawlers tris his hand at a one off suspension system at Bonneville for a 200+mph car, while giving the finger to those who have successfully built high speed cars? Think that would go well in tech inspection?
