what part of running with chainsaws wouldn't be a joke?

let's clarify something. there was no advice given on Pirate - only people who couldn't read getting upset because I wasn't following their advice.

Wait, you just read "they didn't give advice, then got upset because I didn't follow it"... yes, that's exactly what you just read.

The content of Shipwreck has no parts, advice, or help from anyone on Pirate. Even the name "Shipwreck" comes from their claim that it was simply a wreck that would never be finished - as those boys from San Francisco love dress up, Shipwreck was my creation... to them it's just a wreck.

None... that is the amount of advice I got from them.

All I get is a moderator from Pirate coming all the way across the internet to clearly state that I didn't follow their non-existent advice. And I have a damn nice rig because of it.

And they will continue to hate .... so what? Some moderator who spends his days on the internet, and who drives someone else's vehicle is giving advice on how to build stuff. His sidekick hasn't built anything since 1995. Best of all, he's over here defending THEIR honor - these builders' honor, quite frankly not a one of these builders said a word. Rumor has it that they thought the drama was stupid and had better things to do with their lives. - note none of these 'pros' come here.... it's just him. Let it and him go, you're way too worried about them - someday, when his parents throw him out of the basement, he might make something of himself... until then, I said it before and I'll say it again. He's a sociopath.

Found my oil leak. Entire back of the intake. :) I will see if I can stop it by goobering the heck out of it. Also figured out I pulled off the vacuum hose to the MAP sensor when I was resealing the top half of the TBI (fuel leaking from injector seal). Was running like crap. Thought I had a vacuum leak so I was spraying the heck out of everything. Then started on the hoses until I found the map hose discoed. Kinda runs better when attached. Almost ready for the trail.

gobbering generally doesn't work but since the alternative is pulling the intake - it's certainly worth a shot. I've always wondered if you put silicone is a large syringe with a large needle - whether you could force it past the damaged silicone and get it to seal.... heaven knows I've tried the other way and never succeeded.

Today was kind of full between an auto parts swap, deck work, and inevitable honey-dos

But I got more done.
got the paint off the outside of the doors

rubber was removed

rusted bolts removed

also finished my jumper cable mods

accidently, while taking the rubber off with a wire-wheel, I found that it does an amazing job of removing Rustoleum

also did a bit of welding

My goal is finish all the doors this week then paint them and the roof frame this weekend. I was going to powder coat, but by the time I get the coating done I don't think I'll make my 'roof by the 29th' goal (and wheeling in the snow and mud without a roof is a great way to put hair on your chest.... I already have hair on my chest). That said, if I don't have the full top, with full doors and the bikini top, it'd probably be fine....

Others agree with ya. Goobering the back won't stop the leak. I will try what might (others have had luck), pull out existing seal material with dental pick, clean like crazy with brake cleaner, squeeze in new RTV. If that fails I'll yank the intake this winter. Probably do the oil pan too since that gasket is leaking all over. Again.

Uh, it IS an old Chevy motor. Sort of. Vents right at the valve cover and does have a PCV. I do have a little blowby, but not much and mostly when cold. About normal for an gen1 with low miles.

unless you stop the source of the pressurization of the crankcase, sealing will be a futile endeavor.... you can bandaid the situation with a vent-to-atmosphere like the early v8 chevies had - but ultimately the solution is new rings.

when the motor gets tired, the pcv opening and the vent aren't enough to exhaust the blow-by... and normally you won't see it unless you remove the hood and drive at highway speeds and rpms. You need the load of the highway speed to really get an idea of the blow by. Racing the motor in your driveway, while cathartic, doesn't put enough of a load on the motor to give you an idea of how much blow-by you have.

When you get to expert level blow by.... it will blow your dipstick out of the tube and, if the oil level is higher then the bottom of the tube - it'll blow oil out onto your headers... ask me how I know about that.

I hate bodywork.... alas, first an instructional on taking a window regulator out of a pre-77 FJ40

take 4 screws out of regulator, run window to bottom, rotate entire regulator assembly towards front of door, remove

weld up some holes

oh wait, bubba got to fitting the door

bubba was also a large boy and broke the door stop

while my name isn't MP&C, I can fix this

bend up a similar piece on the brake

and fit

then weld

hmmmm... my camera takes most of the pictures, apparently it was quitting time when I took the last one of it finished from the front... ah well, tomorrow night there will be more grinding.... but for now, bubba is banned.

I'm very rarely on Pirate, more a random viewer once every 2-3 months than a member. I have no agenda here, just an observation...

With that said, I think you've recollected parts of the discussion over there incorrectly. I was curious to see how bad it was - and it actually all started out well. There was advice requested, given, AND TAKEN by you regarding disussions over transfercase, transmission, driveline and wheel base lengths. You even mentioned that after rethinking you used another site to help calculate new lengths.

Many people gave advice about wheel base lengths - many had stated that your ideas would in fact work, just not as well as other methods. Many people even apologized early on in not trying to upset you, just trying to offer advice.

Mr Jits even apologized for directness early on saying it derives from his work - the tone of the entire thread really did change when you replied to them to "STFU".

I like the build you've done, I like the rig. I know from my own perspective I would do things different - I also know in hindsight I would do things different on mine as well.

My god, what part of drop it did you not understand? The trolls came out when Justin gave them permission with his 'boring' comment. I'm sure I deserved it for having the audacity of showing where the heads came from for the build. BTW - I never asked for input on wheelbase - simply people gave me their opinion, which I ignored. Of course, ignore on Pirate and omg.... by the time stfu came out, the thread was already dead.

So why don't you simply go back there and find out what wheelbase they suggest for our trails up here... and don't come back. seriously.

As for Mr. Jits - ask him here whether we talk... or better, go see our interaction on his newest build on here.

I guess I need to post guidelines.

1) be nice.
2) if you can't be nice, go away.
3) it's my build, get over it.
4) I do this as stress relief, some seem to like hearing about it, so I post about it. If I get people who seem to think their opinion doesn't stink - then I get stress when I build my build my way. Why do I need it? I don't.

Consider your next posts carefully. This isn't a democracy, it's a thread that stops the when I start cringing at comments on my post. I see Toyotaspeed90, White Stripe, Mace, and a couple others and I cringe because it's going to be a coin flip whether they're going to say something helpful or trollish.

As I've said this all before. I think I'll start posting again when I get the top.... maybe between now and then you all can work it out. If not, it'll be clear and this is the end.

Be sure and thank Toyotaspeed90 for protecting the rest of you from me.

I wish this pirate crap would stop wrecking a good thread

What happened to your custom curb feelers? I was digging that idea. Especially if you drive in downtown Seattle in the curb lane and smack all the idiots standing right at the edge. I was thinking to ask you to make a set for me.

By the way, next trip see how I did my door snubber attachments. Makes door swaps a breeze.

As much as I enjoy the Pirate bashing I gotta agree with chappohj7. what might be really cool is a tool that lets the author prevent specific accounts from adding posts to their thread. Prevent the haters from even posting.

With Mace as moderator... fat chance any change will happen. I wouldn't be surprised at all to see that this latest round of Pirate-infestation started from him.... certainly not me, I simply don't go there and haven't for months.

the curb feeler was also using welding rod with a mig to fill holes and make thin metal weldable.

as for the top, Order on 9/15 told 2 weeks. 2 weeks went past, called "waiting on material", will send out for sure on Tuesday.... not answer the phone today. At this point, I dunno when I'll see it (if ever)....

Which brings me to this isn't the only place I post the thread. But why should I drive clicks to MUD when they've been worse then not helpful?

I'm guessing I've been put on ignore as I can't start a conversation with SBG.

I've been the guy to go against the grain and I've been the guy to prove others wrong.

However, SBG is posting anger towards another forum that may help others, even if it is a "competitive" site or not as good as this one.

SBG is also overly defensive if it goes against what he states. When someone else called him out about it, he lashed out against them. It made me curious to look, and my last response was after I read the first page....

As I stated, I rarely go to Pirate and I don't have an agenda, yet somehow am thrown in the same ring as them because I read postings by its members, including SBG.

Superbuickguy - just wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed following along with the build log. Sucks that people can't take a hint and leave when they're opinions aren't wanted. Anyways congrats on the nice rig.

How's the wheeling over in Nashville? I was there a couple months ago for a wedding wishing I knew some local 40 owners to go check out their rigs and maybe hit some of the local trails. Either that or go hunt down Ian Johnson and say hi :)
