and top has been ordered from Julie.... now to practice a couple weeks of patience.... (lol, when waiting in line for gifts, I didn't have time to wait for patience). Fortunately, I have a couple other things to do to be ready (powder coating) so this will work out okay.

well, Sunday was spent tearing a deck off so nothing of consequence happened on the '40..... tonight I made 2 brackets - yeah, it goes slowly

I was unable to reside my south wall last weekend because of the rain. I need to try again this weekend. If it rains hard I may come north. Fingers crossed for good weather. On another note I replaced my 40's rear u-bolts. I had a brand new set on the shelf. Notice anything missing? Center bolt was fine, the leaves had just twisted.

wow, that's really impressive. Even more so since you're not a pedal-adhered-to-the-firewall type wheeler.

I have to finish my deck, but Sat. is for rest - and rest come from driving around muddy fields with a billion other jeeps... delusion is a wonderful thing ;)
 
I am quite delusional. I fired up the engine over the weekend to hunt for the oil leak source and it died. I fired it back up and it was belching black smoke. Digging deeper I found one of the injectors leaking fuel out the top O-ring. One rebuild kit later it is running normally again. Have not found the oil leak source yet.
 
one of these times, we can throw it up on the lift.... I can get a phosphate die that you run for 5 miles then put on a lift and use a blacklight to follow its path. If not that, I'll borrow my buddy's smoke machine....

I had a bobcat, but it was just way too heavy so I sold it and rented this.... I will buy one of these - what an amazingly handy tool

and yes, a quad track will happen before I return it.

so what I found was if I did the initial bend with my Eastwood bender, then finished the bend with this, I would eventually call it good enough. I wish I could do tight bends like Toyota did - but not going to happen and honestly, I'm the only one who would ever care

I split it in half, welded it back together, flattened the arch, rebent the arch, shortened the legs, kinked a bend (not going to fix).... and that was it for tonight


I think it will adequately hold up PVC canvas... next up is the leg clamps and the front windshield channel

I could have pushed it a bit further..... but 1008 is pretty decent for a vehicle that you can drive on the freeway

what was really cool was the look on the guy's face when I told him I built the suspension and the '40


and yes, to those who think this, I'm bragging.

 
and I had trouble again today - it wouldn't start, a spark issue. I tried jump starting (in case the computer was shutting down because too low of voltage), no. a bit of fuel in the tbi, no. finally someone said something about timing and I realized that I could bypass the computer control of the spark by unplugging the wire you unplug for setting the timing. then it started. plugged it back in, it started and ran fine.

so I have another gremlin to chase.... the problem with buying used parts is sometimes someone took them off because they didn't work... there is a timing issue, I had one backfire when I really loaded and lugged the motor - so I dunno, for that wire-disconnect trick to work, there'd have to be something amiss with the computer (but it doesn't throw a fault code). So I dunno, probably the best thing would be to get another computer an reflash a chip for it.

Also the heater core is leaking - which actually may be a good thing since the FJ40 replacement is expensive and the heat output is nothing to write home about.... in short, build a better mousetrap
 
it's one of two things - either the pickup is garbage (brand new, but chinese), or the used coil has issues. I've never had a coil act this way when it is bad, but with how breathtakingly simple the pickup is.... it's probably the coil.

I also need to start actually tuning this - the chip in the computer is good enough to run it; but it needs to be optimized, especially since I have a warmer cam.
 
and it works fine with a known, good ignition module... that's the 3rd this one has taken

and I must Kudo again NuMark Automotive - he's an amazing help (he's the friend I ask when I'm stumped)
