Serpentine Belt Tensioner Replacement

Might have green using the wrong terminology. These are called Toyota parts and they’re in Toyota boxes. But I think the same could be said for low-priced ignition coils that are knockoffs. So wondering if these are likely to be knockoffs.

I bought one of the eBay idler pulleys - a Toyota part but it wasn’t right. When I tried to install it, the cover plate that goes between the idler and the bolt head came into contact with the pulley and the pulley won’t turn.

Yep, there are different pulleys diameters and the cover on one won't fit the other.

Are they supposed to come with the cover? The new one didn’t.

Edit add: the cover is a separate part -Idler Pulley Cover - Toyota (16659-50022). I assume this matches the latest idler pulley diameter size.

Idler pulley do have a front and back side. If oriented wrong, it will rub and damage pulley.

Also note the new replacement tensioner / pulley from Toyota OEM is a smaller pulley then seen on the older model 2UZ.

No go. The new cover didn't work either. Returning the idler pulley and buying from a dealer.

What I found to be strange was when I ordered the replacement pulley from Toyota they handed me a pulley the same size as my original. Then when I decided I had to replace the entire unit , I brought that pulley back and the full assembly they gave me had a smaller pulley .

I'm concerned the smaller pulley is causing my particular noise

Thanks! Great write-up. Just did mine. Did not need to remove the power steering pulley, just pulled off the whole unit with 3x 14mm? bolts accessed though the pulley.

I recently replaced my idler pulley, accessory belt, and tensioner pulley on my '99 LX470. When I took out the bolt holding the idler pulley in place (90105-10246) I noticed some metal shavings (threads) on the bolt. It was also much more difficult to remove the bolt than I expected. Sure enough when I looked inside with a flashlight, I found evidence of cross threading.

I was camping with some other mudders so I had to reassemble it at least to get me home. I was able to torque it to about 5 ft-lb but the threads are clearly destroyed. Can the receiver (the threaded hole) for the bolt be replaced or repaired somehow? If not, what are my options.

Thanks for any insight you're able to provide.

I had the same thing happen ,not sure if it was cross threaded or jus that little sleeve wears out. Metal shavings could be seen all around tensioner.

Your destined to replace the tensioner and pulley assembly.

If "idler pulley" bolt threads bad, replace bolt. Run thread chase restore tool in female counter parts threads. Torque to 27ft-lbf. If it then, will not take the full torque. The threads in female counter part bad, replace fan bracket. I've never seen these threads bad, but s%#t happens.

What I do see, is idler pulley install backward, or not seated properly.

Dealer part didn’t fit either. Anyone have any advice about buying a new idler pulley that fits properly? Must we go aftermarket?

Are you referring to the pulley on the serpentine belt tensioner?

Like you noted earlier there are two options, the older style tensioner has a larger pulley the newer style is smaller. I don't have part numbers handy but work with Toyota to get these ordered and sorted out.

'99 LX470

I found a replacement Fan Bracket (PN 16307-0F010) but I would have to replace the bearing and accessories attached therein.

Do you know if anyone sells the parts for a fan bracket rebuild? If I can, I would love to save the $215 but I don't mind going OEM.

Per the FSM p. EM-13, I found the fan bracket but cannot find any particulars about the individual parts.

Fan bracket is not serviceable owing to the way the bearing is 'staked in' the back of the unit. Replace with new.

The 'Aisin' unit (plenty good) will run you about $100.00 shipped.

I ordered an idler pulley no. 2 from Impex and it fit properly.

Unfortunately, a little noise still from the tensioner pulley. Had hoped the 15-minute idler pulley job would do the trick. 🤨

I was in the same boat, I have truly replaced everything that spins under my hood and within the timing belt train with the exception of the AC Compressor. I still get an early morning, chirp chirp chirp, it drives me crazy. Once the vehicle is at operating temp it goes way but man it drives me crazy. I blame the belt tensioner, even though its brand new

^ I've had the same issue for the past year or so. It chirps for 5-10 seconds then all is right with it. I've checked everything except the tensioner. I remember the last time I swapped in a new tensioner it was different design than OEM so not sure, since its been a few years, if there was a part update from Toyota or not. But, assuming that's the problem child, the replacement has lasted a fraction of the miles the original tensioner did...

Yeah the newer tensioner when bought as an assembly seems to have a much smaller pulley that the original that was pulled off. I assume there is a change in design to make up for the smaller pulley since the belt size remains the same.

Per Onur @Beno when Toyota intro'd the 2UZ-FE in the USA built Tundra in 2002/2003 or there abouts, Toyota went from supplying Made in Japan tensioners being available to the USA fabricated variant being stocked at Toyota parts dept (along with most other front of motor parts like water pump, idlers, etc., etc.). So, just a guess on my part, but as sometimes is typical the OEM made in Japan parts seem to have better performance and durability than the superseded USA made parts...
