So I’m in the middle of pulling out my motor from my 74’ 40. I have been looking and rebuild kits and parts but wasn’t sure on what to get being that it’s this year. I have heard that the 74 is actually a F.5. I didn’t know if I should order a 2F kit or a F kit or if there a difference? Any help with this serial number would help thanks so much

FWIW, the casting date is encoded on the top of the cyl head, and the LH side of the engine block to help nail down the month & year of production.

What FJ40Jim is referring to is pictured below. The circled numbers on the right are month and day (in this case "1003" October 3rd) and the number on the left is the year (in this case "3" 1973). So, the cylinder head pictured was cast/made 10/3/1973. Hope this helps.

The "60051" is the part number for the cylinder head that was on the 1974 F engines.

In my case number on the cylinder head show "4" " 0422" but engine number 2F from late 1975... So, the cylinder head from 1974 year model on 2F engine?

What is the casting number on the head? For example, the picture above I posted has "60051". That will give a better idea of which cylinder head you have. If it is 60051 then it is from a 1.5F engine. If I am not mistaken, and I certainly could be, I recall some people posting that they would put a 1.5F cylinder head on a 2F block--exactly why, I don't remember.

You got it. Born April 22, 1974 and originally on a 1.5F.

I am sure that somebody far more knowledgeable than me can point out the advantages to having a 1.5F head on a 2F block. (that is, if there is one).

I hope 74fj40Oregon can found this information useful. I have order kit for 2f,.. I have compare with old one (even my head from 1.5F) it looks exactly the same. I think follow your model year is a good idea.

So here’s a few markings I could find, I didn’t see any of the marking regarding the year but it’s got hooker headers. The stamps are kinda confusing maybe you guys know

I guess mark should be at carburetor/air filter tube site (see on your picture). Outside of valves cover.
