Yeah, I form fit my AL TC front skid to that front diff space going too fast and braking too late last summer. Very hard hit into a cross road ditch type obstacle. I was pretty glad the airbags didn't deploy.
This pic kind of shows the deformation into that area.

When I made mine, I made supports to to protect the middle of the skid and the diff mounts. I did not want mine to cave in like that.

It looks like it did it's job though!

OK- Mystery solved- Truth found- Thread Concluded!

200 series 1, 4Runner 0 for OEM protection from death by small rock impact. I think this is definitive.

I really think the 200 series would not have had any issues with the same impact. Look closely at the images below and let me know what you all think...

The damage to my 4Runner:

Just to be clear, I do think if the tires dip down into a hole and set the diff on a rock your failure could happen here. But it would be less likely in a forward impact with a rock.

I definitely agree with your assessment, and I really appreciate you taking a look and thinking this through with me here- but in my scenario I can now see exactly why my 4runner diff had it's issue and I am fairly confident that the way your 200 front diff is set up would have prevented that from happening.

Good deal. When you get that 200 be sure to post.. or any other curiosities on the way of course.

I do agree here. There should be enough beef with the LC covers to generally handle an incident like this. Once at least as they are really made to be sacrificial to absorb and protect the rest of the car from incidents. Not necessarily repeated abuse. Even the stoutest of aftermarket skids, somethings going to give, and it's not likely the rock.

Not sure if this was a factor, but one criticism of IFS is that with braking, downhill, or downward load, that clearance will be reduced as the suspension flexes. Versus a solid axle where clearance at the lowest point generally never changes. An often shared driving strategy when hitting rocks and other things is to put the tire on it rather than to straddle. This strategy can also protect sidewalls of the tire as it puts the meatiest part of the tread on the obstacle.

I love how your Airstream 27FB is just a line item in the mods on your signature... LOL... nice "mod"... :)

Almost... almost traded my 4Runner in on this spotless 2014 LX570 with 54K miles on it yesterday... Got really, really close but couldn't make the numbers work. It was a beaut... I'm hoping I'll snag something pretty soon or maybe head back and snag this one this weekend. The Nebula Gray Pearl is perfect for this truck 🔥, but I would prefer black or grey interior Vs the tan interior:

I love my interior but there is no option for the grey past 2015. That is a great and rare combo, less chance for staining and monochrome! Never seen one when i was shopping.

Thanks, I'll post up this weekend when I take a close look and measurements. I'm also interested in the diff bracket thickness and material. I wonder if the bracket was the weakest link here. I'll take a look at parts diagrams as well. Although, it is very tempting to just grab a 200 and never look back... I did test drive a ‘08 LC w/102k @$36k in November for a potential trade on my 5th gen- wish I had done it! I hesitated because of preferring the driving position of the 5th gen- seats go lower- which I like.

Yup, Appalachians. Getting Toyota to send a tow truck up was an "interesting" experience using their call service center that was routing through the Philippines. It took 4 hours to get a tow truck out and the Toyota phone reps couldn't get the location right so they sent out about 4 tow trucks before they finally found me. It was very frustrating but it did work out in the end and they towed it to the closest dealer who worked with my insurance company to get all the needed repairs done. Now I'm worried nobody will pay full price for the truck because of the entry in the Toyota system and carfax, etc. If that's the case I may be better off keeping it.
Would you mind sharing the location of this trail? I always looking for trails to drive in our neck of the woods. Thanks

It's about 7 hours drive from you... PM sent

Drove out to see this 200 today. The dealer put it up on a rack and it was so rusty that they said they can’t sell it and they’re sending it to auction. At least that’s what they told me. It did look particularly rusty tbh.
I was really looking forward to snagging this, so I’m a bit disappointed.

They are out there, be persistent in your search. I looked at several rusty ones before finding one just listed at 6AM one morning.

Do not even think about doing something like that. Keep up the search man!

Part III of III

Took me a minute to find a good one at a fair price. Mission accomplished!

Couldn’t be happier to be a new 200 series owner and official forum member. :)

Thank you and no kidding on those OEM springs! Old Man Emu springs incoming ASAP. I imagine I'll need new LCAs (due to bushings) etc. too. We'll see.
