Just doing a little research on where I would want to take The Mule if I decide to go the "built' motor route. I think I'll talk to the kind folks at Yodaman on Monday and find out what they can do in this category, but I'd like a suitably hotter-than-the-L52 transmission to go with this, and searching the wide world of the interwebs So what's the story on these transmissions?
Which one's tougher? which one can better haul a load? (I'm hoping to get an 8' fishing boat in a couple years, and would like something to trailer a bit better) Which one shifts the smoothest, and has the tallest overdrive?
What are their gear ratios?

How much does an 8' fishing boat weigh? Are you talking about an aluminum dingy with an outboard? I have towed a 3,000 lb trailer with my 22re/ 5 speed more times that I would like to admit and the tranny has held up well. The clutch had to be changed at about 180,000 miles. Not sure what tranny is my 94 but it seems to have held up OK to that bit of towing. Honestly, If I were going to have Larry build me a motor for the truck That I bought (that he built), I might just go directly to the source and ask him what he thinks.

Thanks for the tips, and I will talk to Larry Monday before school.

Looking at the specs, it seems that L52, G52, and W56 are all geared about the same, it's all just a matter of robustness and maintainability.

Not sure what yer building, but you might wanna think about an R150...

I know chain drives are eww, but I've never heard of one breaking... And the low range is just a tad lower than the gear drive.

I can't speak for the shifter locations and if the X member will fit, but I do know that joker's heavy duty... It's used behind the 1H(?) in country's that have a lick of sense...

I'd go w56. If I remember correctly from an old post on another forum, the guru Marlin claimed them to be about 20% stronger than G52. Or go all out and go for the R151, but beware that it is hard to find as it only came in 1986 and 87 turbo pick ups.

My ideal mod would be to run a 1KZ-TE/R151F, but I'm also looking at my options. I'd rather have the efficiency, and low-end torque of a diesel, but gassers are easy to come by around here, which means repairs would be more cost-effective.

At this stage, it would be really cool to have a total firecracker motor, but at the same time, I'd still prefer diesel.
Plus, I was just curious about these transmissions, because my L52's not that great.

Hi:)
My European spec 4Runner 1994 is factory mounted with 1KZ-T (not E) and R150F.
I still works great after 298000km and too many owners, some of them didn´t care much about oil change, type or quality.
In Denmark most Hilux 2,4TD, 4Runner 2,4TD / 3,0TD are using the R150F gearbox. It´s known to be a strong box.

Martin, I see this is your first post. Welcome to our slice of MUD.

I run a Marlin built G54HD which started as a G52. As I understand it, the G series had some bearing and perhaps oiling issues. Mr. Marlin supposedly knows how to cure all that. :D

Not sure how it compares to the W56 or L series tho...

I'm going to run mine till the wheels fall off!!
