so i am buying my first 55 and do not know much of them.

the rig i am purchasing is a 74 with a f and 3 spd. roof is good body not bad, all together has good potential.:)

i have a 60 with a not to hot frame so what i am wondering is what can i steal from that rig for the 55 without re inventing the wheel. springs for sure i would like to swap and maybe the p.s. and does any supplier out there spezilize in the 55. sor has some stuff thinking mostly of steel fenders.

Iron Pig Off Road.

You will not find any steel fenders at SOR only fiberglass.

Currently there is very little sheet metal made for the 55. That will change if I have anything to do with it.

Best bet on resources is to read through some of the post here in the 55 section. Ask questions. There are a lot of smart people in here that can help.

What month 74? Things changed about half way through.

What are your intentions with the vehicle?

How about some pics?

Bluerock,

Congrats on getting the pig........like Marshall said just search and read here in the sty and you'll find photos/information on all sorts of 55's (from rusty hulks to ones that make you drool) to help you decide on which directions you want to take with your rig. Good luck! Dave

Yes your whole 60 driveline is recyclable and a nice little upgrade to have on the hoof so to speak, if needed. Marshall hit the nail on the head and there are lots of good people and advice in this pig stye. Welcome

thanks for the input

The axles and springs 2-3" lifted off the 60 will definatly be recycled then and at the same time i will get disc brakes. the motor and tranny not so sure about as they are diesel.

my direction to go with it for now is just an inclement weather driver i.e snow rain etc. whenever i cannot drive the 42 i will drive the pig which here is more often than not. the f and 3 spd will do for now.
I picked this up from lester here on mud so i still have to go across the border and get her but he sent me some 30 photos of it and as you can see it needs some new fenders and i would prefer steel over glass.

You could in theory swap the entire drivetrain from the 60 to the 55

That's a good time consuming consideration ;p Compare both inner frame, motor/ bellhousing mount dimensions & see if there are any clearance issues/ differences for the :pig: body. I know the 60 series front axle is 3" wider on the pass side, so outboarding spring hangers will be needed there to realign, IIRC. I would retrofit the 60 series dash cuz I've always liked how low it sits & it also has a more modern feel & roomyness to it. Hoping to see a build thread soon w/ moar pics :D

thanks lc hamma that is the info i am looking for. i want to have a plan in place with budget first before she comes off the road for upgrades. i will have to wait to get it here to do a bunch of measurements. newbie question but what is IIRC. are there any diesel 55 out there.

Looks like a decent rig.Welcome.

Mud member cruiser_guy has a pig that he fitted with the 3B and 5 speed out of a 60.Scroll through the pages here in the 55 section until you find his POTM (pig of the month) thread and you will be able to read all about it.He has links in the thread to the install. If you have the shop and the abilities then you could end up with a great Pig.The 3B is far better in the way of fuel economy compared to the F or 2F but are a bit gutless on the hills. If you've driven your 60 much then you know that. You can put a turbo on it if you want the extra power as cruiser_guy did.
Lots of other great Pig threads on here but it sounds like you would be doing something along the same lines as him.

Be sure to post up a build thread as you go.

IIRC = If I recall correctly.

IIRC means "If I Remember Correctly"

There are some diesel 55's out there. cruiserguy has one, dieselcruiserhead had one and is building another,
There is at least one more Cummins 4BT powered 55 somewhere around Denver
I know of one with a 6AT Cummins in it that belonged to Royal Rose
I have seen one with a 2H in it

edit: And Rhino has a 4BDT Isuzu diesel in his.

Mine will be getting a 1HZ diesel someday if I ever get around to putting it in.

if he has a toyota diesel (im guessing it will be a B series??) wouldnt that be the best option, rather then going to e expense of an Izuzu, cummins, or any other varient?

id say thow the toyo diesel in!

Yeah i do have a spare 3b with a 4spd kicking around but it is a little under powered without a turbo and such. i was thinking of a cummins swap/ or bigger newer toyota but not yet a little pricey and hard to find some one wanting to part with a still decent motor.

The rip in the door shown in picture two is the same one I've got in both my doors. I'd assume standard.

Odd stuff. My 75 had none of these problems. But the 70 had similar door problems. As the roof was caved in I was thinking someone used the rear doors as a stair. Guess not. Is this a stress from off road or a play out of badly adjusted doors over time or???????????

As for the other stressed points? Don't think that would be "normal" but I do not know.
