Sweet. What gears are in running in your axles (I could probably read your build and find out)? I'll be curious to see how much time you spend in low low 1st gear. The main time I dislike my single 4.7s is trying to haul ass in reverse. With that said I typically needed a fair bit of skinny pedal to make obstacles. 2nd gear low with 4.88 diffs is my go to. You get a little better traction than I do so you'll likely enjoy the lower gears.
 
Running 5.29s in the diffs and dual 2.28 cases, both made huge differences in the crawl ratio and hands down the best mods I've done, except the trailer that is.

I can see where being stuck in 4.7 reverse only would be frustrating but I don't currently and won't have that issue witht he 4.7 in the rear case.

Since there's not a lot of tech in this thread I'll add a little and maybe save someone searching further. Crawl ratio is calculated by multiplying a few simple gear rations: Here's the formula:
  • (1st gear of tranny) x (TC gear) x (diff gear) for a single case, for dual cases you simply add another multiplier for a 2nd TC.

For instance right now I'm 3.83 (R150F 1st gear) x 2.28 x 2.28 x 5.29= 105.32 : 1 gear ratio. When trying to crawl I'm pretty much 1st gear low-low at all times, occasionally 2nd but typically only when needing to bump over an obstacle or going down steep hills. 105:1 is fairly slow but I find myself feathering the clutch at times especially trying to get up a big rock.

So now, I'm swapping in 4.7 in the rear case, the new crawl ration will be 217.11:1. My 2nd gear ratio will still be about 10% slower than my current 1st gear.

Just for comparison with others in our group: Steve is something stupid like 1,019:1 might be slower depending on his tranny, John is 172.67:1 and I think Rocky is 222.78:1 (assuming he has 5.29s.) so I'll be right in the middle excluding Stevie-boy, who again, is just stupid slow.

Just looking back at when I first got into this running bone stock everything on bald 31s and my ratio was something like 39:1, woopow! As many times as I've said I'd love to wheel on stocker again I'm really lying through my teeth.

I'm about 511:1 Ted. 3.95? x 2.28 x 2.28 x 4.7 x 5.29 = 510.528

If you ever get to Katemcy (Round Up is going on right now :'( as I type this), you'll understand the main reason I went so low.

I'm sure you were ecstatic when you first wheeled with the "super low gearing", but have probably since discovered how nice it would be to be even lower.

Rocky is probably running the fairly standard 'Dual Ultimate' setup of 2.28x4.7 which yields 200-225:1, depending on axle gearing - same setup John has, what Ted is building now and what mine had originally. Passing 100:1 will put a big smile on your face; passing 200:1 will make that smile nearly permanent. :D
 
I've never considered stickies for the reason that I'd rather break traction and winch over something than get the traction but subsequently break something in the driveline.

However, fast-forward to present when I live in an area in which the wheeling is predominantly wet hills, and now I'm considering them. The determining factor now is that everyone I wheel with up here says they're worthless. I really want to be able to show them what they can do when used properly... I.E. - crawling and not bouncing.

are these the same guys that are posting their pink heeps on book of faces and wheeling in 4 hi only? Yes - Stickies would certainly be advantageous.

Ran into a sang today, really i should say another snag. When I ordered my 21 spline gears I recieved a 21 spline dual case adapter instead, dunno but it happened. :bang: Reached out to the guy and he apologized for the problem and immediately had TG drop ship the proper parts 3 day air, I received 2 days later. I opened the box and it looked correct so all was good.

Today, tore out the t-cases and went to install the 4.7 gears, Nope! TG sent 23 spline gears instead of the 21, ****!! Got a hold of the guy this afternoon and confirmed he truly did order the 21 spline from TG, packing slip actually confirms his story and this time TG screwed up.

So, at this point I'm either gonna go ahead and cough up for the 23 spline coupler and keep the gears or wait for TG to eat my shorts. Of course they don't open till Monday... no going slow this weekend. :(
 
tell me. For a few minutes I toyed with throwing them in the front case just to get the job done but thought better of it after contemplating the pitfalls.
 
Oh yeah, you don't have twin stick yet either, do you? That'd mean you could never run in 4.7 4wd, only 2.28 or 2.28+4.7 4wd. I didn't think of that yesterday or I would not have even talked pros and cons; I would have just told you to wait and get them in the back case.
 
Yeah after we talked i started walking myself through all the gears and the loss of 2.28 2WD which would've sucked but the real deciding factor was 2WD reverse in 4.7 only as Tony said earlier. Couldn't bring myself to accept that just because of my lack of patience.

Not twin sticked but plan to triple stick it one of these days just because they're out there. For now I don't really see the big benefit.
 
this has all been fun and all but I'm tiring of it. Here's the latest and honestly it works in my favor in the end.

TG is shipping a 23 spline coupler (greatly reduced price) overnight (free) for my hassles which is a very desired upgrade. Since I'm running a Marlin dual case adapter the only modification is to remove a detent ball that Marlin requires but TG does not. Assuming this is the last of the headache I'm making out much better than if I had ordered all the parts as part of the plan.

I've been a little worried about the 21 spline output with 39s and a V6, now I shouldn't have to since I'll be 23 spline in both cases.
 
You make it sound like that v6 is a thoroughbred :flipoff2:. I was hoping we could race single 4.7 reverse. I bet I'd win.

Sounds like TG made it right although nothing sucks worse than not getting the parts you wanted when you thought you would.
 
I got the cases back together only to strip 2 studs during reassembly, gonna have to drill those out and re-tap with a larger stud. I don't think it's gonna be a big deal. I ended up finding the studs at the local Ace hardware after visiting Oreilly's up the road, what a joke that was. You've heard the stories before but when the guy asked what they were for and did I have a part # I knew I was at the wrong place, should've known better.

I expect I'll have it back together this weekend.
