Starting the lay out by mocking up the bed on the floor. It’s a big puzzle except each piece has to be customized. The foam board is to protect the cab and serve as a spacer. Also trimming rot out of the bulkhead. This will be a custom bobbed long bed to fit a SWB chassis.

More templates with pegboard. It works to hold it in place. Cut the quarter panels to the length I think they’ll be at. This is approximately where it’ll land.

End of Day 4. Coming in the home stretch on assembly. You can see the final stance. Right now it’s supported by jack stands. We’ll fab up the mounts tomorrow. We’re going to modify a factory roll bar to be a headache rack.

Spent the day welding bed cross braces under the bed. Then bolted the bed on. Here’s the truck down on the ground supporting the weight of the bed. This should represent final ride height.

are you going to use a coating on the inside of the bed or the same paint as the cab?
We’ll Raptor Line the inside of the bed as well as the underside just like the cab.

Here’s more pics from the process. We jacked up the front until the truck was level. Then spaced the bed off the cab and mounted it level to the ground.

Here’s some more pics of the process. We also fabbed up a headache rack and spare tire holder behind the cab. The headache rack is integrated into rails that go along the top of the bed. We added some stake pockets to the rails. Also a shameless weld flex from the 16 year old. The last pic is the bed being removed at the end of the so it can go to paint.

Absolutely beautiful work. Well done. Bueno. Your lad is going to have by-far the coolest ride at school.

Seeing all these pics really makes me miss New Mexico.

Can I ask where you sourced the panels/tailgate for the bed? I’m on the hunt for a restorable bed for my 1977 FJ45, but I’d happily assemble one if I could track down the panels for it. Thanks.

We got them from a friend of a friend kind of thing here in NM. The guy's shop was really cool. Custom 4 door powerwagon, FJs, and crew cab VW buses.
