Not much done on the 55 this week. I did take off the arm of the Center arm part that I have in preparation to installing it on the fj55. I also received my drag link in the mail the other day. I am hoping to install that once I get back after the weekend. should solve my loosy goosy steering. I will also install the ome steering damper that @SC-Cruiser gave me. I have been working on the side quest the last few days...

Side Quest: I finally started working on the isuzu pup over the past few days. I got the intake back on, alternator wired back up, carb back on, new fuel pump, the dizzy clocked and installed and most importantly I got the broken tap out of the exhaust manifold. I now have some oversized bolts threaded in there that I turned into studs. Its not right but its different!

Hoping to get it running again soon!

It’s good progress. Inquiring minds want to know how you got the broken tap out?
I took a dremel tool and one of these bits 9903 Cutting & Carving Bits | Dremel - https://www.dremel.com/us/en/p/9903-2615009903 and with a welding mask as a face shield sat there for an hour and a half cutting away at the broken tap. I did also use an air hammer trying to brake up the tap too witch actually did help some. Then I retapped with the next size up since I mommocked up the hole that had the broken tap. it was an afternoon of work for sure. there are probibly better bits to use its just what the hardware store had in stock here. I have used this method before on a water pump stud that broke off. you gotta be carful because you can loose control of that bit and it can explode (has happened to me before)

The best tap juice I ever used was Boeing Lube; way expensive. Great price and works well most of the time is Anchor Lube.
There are broken tap remover devices, not sure how well they work. I think EDM can work well if you have the stuff.

Hard to argue with success, I think I'll pick up a couple of carbide burrs next time I need to add something to get free shipping on Amoron.

Yeah certainly not the right tool but its what I had access too. For regular bolts the carbide bits do really well but you gotta be really carful of the metal shavings they make. the little buggers become magnatized and then they stick up then you get awesome little metal splinters in your fingers. Like Cactus spines! I did use some marine grade wd40 type stuff for my tap juice. (also not the right tool but its what I had).

In My "outboard marine motors" class I am teaching we have broken many bolts. We are going to be doing all the methods for extracting broken bolts soon haha. I do quotations because A lot of the time we are doing car stuff. Additionally I originally wanted to do an automotive class but I had to compromise because of lack of facilities aka our wood shop area was not up to the code needed to legally teach an auto shop class even thought they have done it in the past....

Marine stuff will be good to teach. I worked in that world for a few years. Salt marine is extra “fun”
Its good for around here for sure. We have a big boat/fishing industry. Salt water eats these little outboards from the inside out. You should have seen the thermostat we pulled out the other day..... whoa!

I admire you stick with it, get it done approach. I have the worst time with broken off bolts. If I try to drill them out I inevitably booger up the threads in the hole because I’m off center or at an angle. My success record using eze-outs is mixed at best.

I did become a fan of helicoil when I had to repair the stripped out threads for mounting the brake caliper on my disk brake conversion.

Sounds like the thermostat on the vintage ,86 Johnson we picked up a couple of years ago. It was easily able to figure out why the boat had been overheating with the previous owner. I don’t think the thermostat had ever been serviced.

Next time the Johnson has problems I will bring it to you to fix

Thanks! Broken bolts are always frustrating. The broken waterpump bolt or stud that I had to get out on the old 2f on the saltwagon took me probibly 6 hours to get out over 3 days of off and on working on it. I was able to save the threads on that one at least. Easy outs work when they work but when you break them the nightmare becomes worse usually...

I am in Burlington NC right now for a wedding and currently sitting and wishing I was home tinkering on somthing. I am at a wierd idle time with not alot to do in the next few hours. That white truck is so close I just need a day to button everything up. The plan is to use it in the cold weather while I start doing to patches on the fj55.

This weekend is not the weekend for you to work on any of you vehicles. With the Northeaster forming up of the coast it’s going to be wet and windy. Hopefully you don’t have trouble getting home

I bet most boat engines go to crap because the coolant system not worn rings or bearings! I have personally learned alot about boat engines in teaching this course but not without lots of annoyances...

These came in yesterday. They were suppost to be 2 25hp one assembled and one disassembled so we could put one together in class....

I could have still done a few things. Its not as bad on those noreasters as you would think. Where that truck is parked it blocks most of the wind on noreasters. Only terrible when its raining hard. The roads on the north end get messed up. But you are right I am worried about getting back on Sunday.

Those are some nice motors. Definitely a bit bigger than 25 hp

Yep, some one didn't understand punctuation and instead fo 2, 25 hp motors, it looks like they sent 225 hp motors. Score.
Yeah they are a 135 I think and 75hp motors. I am frustrated that they were sent honestly. A little too big for what I need for teaching, and the boat we have is only a 13 foot boat. Ill make it work though.
You should have some great weather when you get back!
Can't stop!
I think so! I am excited to get my little truck going when I get back. also starting on the steering on salted pork when I get back!

Well, it's pretty snotty out on HI. I'm sure you have a few options, but If y'all are driving down island and need a place to wait out weather for ferry ops to resume give me a shout. There is space at my place, and my sisters rental next door is empty right now.

I dont know if we would have made it to you because of pea island wash over. But we did make it back yesterday at about 740pm. They ran two swan quarter to ocracoke ferrys at 430. we originally were on a 130pm that did not run. Then we tried to schedual a cedar island to ocracoke at 4 and they didnt run that because cedar island roads were flooded. then we decided to drive up to naggshead and spend then night because pea island was trash and the hatteras ferrys were not running but we were thinking somtime the next day we could make it to the hatteras ferry. Then a friend on the inside called us saying they were going to run 2 boats out of swan quarter at 4:30 and it was first come first serve. We made one of those ferrys.

Glad to be home and not driving. of course I am frustrated because where I have been working on my truck is flooded. and I will have to wait till there is less water to start it up...

That's amazing that you got home! A lot of mental gymnastics, it's not easy or fast to get from Swan Quarter to Cedar Island; good to have some inside intel. Yep, Pea Island got hosed about 1130 and they shut down NC12 not long after. It's wild, and the rest of the week doesn't look much better with continued swell and strong N winds. So glad you guys made it home.

You flooded from tide, rain, or both? Put the waders on and get the zupup zipping along.
