Taos is a great place. Tons of contrast. But, if you and your wife move to Santa Fe, we could go on trail rides together. If I was moving to a scenic landscape, it would be on the other side of the Gorge, Tres Piedras. The town there has some serious machinery; you get all this automotive and an abandoned narrow gauge railroad to look at, but, it is like a half-hour or more for anything greater than a dinner, not even gasoline. I'd love to live in White Rock, just down the road. It is like everything that older New Mexico is not, tidy neighborhoods, you'll have a home with a functional garage, suburbia, but in a scenic natural setting. El Rito, Dixon, and La Madera are neat small towns, too. Anything on the Turquise Trail would be awesome as well - ghost towns. More than abandoned cars, there are entire towns that are abandoned.
Not related to the conversation at all, but El Rito is the town with the big tower art sculpture thing right? It’s got a funny name like Polar Vortex Tower or something. Maybe I’m thinking of another town up that way.

Now everyone is going to expect you to winch them out of the sand traps. 😆
rereading this made me think of what the park rangers call the holes tourist leave on the beach.... Ranger Traps!

Yeah I think it is. Mars Polar Lander.... pretty out there haha. I remember reading about that some where? Maybe i found it in reasserting an art lesson on land art.

I’m thinking it falls into folk art or outsider art. It’s a pretty wild thing to spot cruising down such a backcountry road!

Had to look it up:

Permanently Closed is what the webs are saying.

Yeah that’s it! I was doing a solo camping trip to the Carson NF and got on a paved road going from one spot to another. Very rural out there so imagine the surprise seeing that thing!

A few years ago, I visited the badlands just north of Abiquiu Elementary School. This place is amazing. Imagine the Salt Wagon here. Yet, I've only hiked it.

Then I drove thru El Rito. From the only open section (during the winter months the gate is closed) of this Carson NF forest road you get this view... This is the basically the skyline that you see in Ansel Adams - Moonrise Over Hernandez, just further north.

I have been out here! It would be amazing to be out there again! my wife and I honey mooned in Taos and drove all around. Abiquiu was probibly my favorite area. I dont think we will get back out there this year but maybe next. Maybe one day I can convince my wife to move out that way. I remember really liking angel fire, and a little town called Red River too (a guy who owned a snowboard/ski shop had a fj40 out front there). Both of these two little towns are on the opposite side of taos than Abiquiu though.

I love 100 mile horizons, but there is beauty in a tight narrow steep canyon. No matter where you go, there you are.

Daniel Boone or Davy Crockett in testimony before CONgrees, responded to the question had he got lost when out blazing trails on the frontier, "No but once I was bewildered for 3 three days.

False spring here for sure yesterday. It was very nice in the 60s. I took the opportunity to take the doors off and go for a beach drive.

Random question for every one: I need to do my shocks soon. The ones that are on it came with the land cruiser and are not the nicest. does anyone have any recommendations? I was leaning to Bilstien or the Dobinsons ones.

I hope I get the rest of my winch stuff by the end of the week so I can spool on the cable. but dang does it look cool on the front!

I am very happy with my Bilstien shocks on my 40..

I have not Been in a 40 with Dobinsons, but they are sure nice on my 200 series.

X2 on bilstien.

I’ve put them on several vehicles.
Heard the IMS shocks from D’sons are nice but they’ll never get another dollar of mine. The yellow ones are fine, nothing special. They are on my 62

Sounds like a story. what happened with Dob'sons? Sounds like some issues I have with some other 40 parts vendors haha.

No real updates of yet. I winched on 100 feet of 5/16ths cable Using a Jumper cable on the post. Does anybody have a solenoid wiring set up on a single post motor they can share? I don't think the soilinod I have will run the winch unfortunately or its Dead on arrival, I could not get it to click on. I really didn't get time to mess with everything last weekend due to some house projects. FOund this picture on some forum? would this work for wiring up a solinoid?

Random side note: the fj40 drives much better with the weight on the front now. Like it goes down the road alot more steady now going 55.

Other: I got this pneumatic drill in the mail yesterday. I am pretty happy with the quality of these M7 products so far. I am hoping to use this drill on the driver side rockers to drill out spot welds.

I also purchased a m7 air hammer and 3/8ths air ratchet that were on clearance from JB tools. M7 3/8" Drive Air Ratchet Wrench [SET] (NE-0357) - https://www.jbtools.com/m7-3-8-drive-air-ratchet-wrench-set-ne-0357/ cant beat 40$. https://www.jbtools.com/m7-air-hammer-kit-with-round-shank-5-chisels-and-spring-retainer-sc-211c/ these are not here as the mail still has them.

I have never used this brand before. Really only have experience with aircat and ingersol rand tools. These m7 tools seem to be pretty good for what they are. I think I will pick up a impact from aircat and a spot sander from aircat.

Bilstein's for the win!

@Roastchestnuts Cadillac Ranch was wet when my son and I were there a few years back. Hope all is well with the engine, saw the head was no good. Bummer.
