Guys, I've searched and can't seem to come up with anything. I remember someone mentioning how a mid 90's s-10 blazer gas tank fits behind the rear axle , even with the angled supports. And they had pics.Anyone installed one, and how did it work out? Thanks:cheers:
 
Hey Alex,

I believe it was John Rudzitis that had the S-10 tank in the Orangecrate. As I recall, it fit well.

I Did It!

There's a few more detailed pics on my :pig: buildup thread, prolly 3rd or 4th page. Can't be much different than a 40 as both rear frames have the same diag. braces & similar width. I've heard of two others doing the same mod in a 40 - one was doing a diesel conversion & the other PM'd me a while back & I've since deleted his message. It's a 20 gal. tank, inlet on right side, & has an in-tank fuel pump. I built an inlet tunnel above the bed. All you'd need to do is run some 2" dia rubber tube up to your fuel door.

I am going through this right now. I thought it was a great idea as I am putting in a 4.3 from a blazer and the fuel pump was going to be a problem. Bought a tank, brought it home, held it in place and found out it hangs LOWWW. I have +1.5 shackles with the rear springs flipped. Not going to work. There is about 2" uptravel before the diff hits the tank. I am probably going to plas the front of the tank off and put a flat face on it to clear. Might not be a problem if the springs aren't flipped. Either way, it will hang very low if the truck is not SOA. I'll double check tonight and maybe get some pics up if I remember. Tim
 
Thanks for the input, guys! Well, I did the easy part, bought a tank. Now for the install. I'm using it for an auxiliary tank for more range, will plumb it to feed the main tank when it gets low. I'll keep you posted on progress. :cheers:
 
On mine, I cut out the body crossmember & reinforced w/ 1/4" flat plate. The top of the tank sits about ~ 1/2" from under the tub. Also, I installed a 2" bod lift & I believe a heavy duty skid is a MUST for a wagon.
 
Chuck, I have a 2" body lift, the trimmed crossmember is a good tip. A skid will be a for sure. NICE BUILD by the way !!Marshall, Good ideas there, my rear springs(60 series) are flipped but I'm keeping the shock mounts to the front of the axle and x-member. Your pics helped, thanks. One thing I've learned, don't piss off the cook, even if he is"token"!! Tim, Sounds like I need to check clearances closely, of course my exhaust is in the way(NOTHING can be easy!)Question? My tank is from an 87 blazer, I don't know the differences between it and a mid-90s tank. Waiting on a buddy to bring his 95 over for me to see. My main problem is being close to stock height. With a lift and 2" BL you will be better off than me so far. Keep us posted. BTW, it was a Mossberg 500 pistol grip 18.5" barrel. All black. I miss that one but I got a sherrifs winchester 12ga to replace it. Its got a stock and wood furniture but it'll do. ;) Tim
 
Here are some pics of the 20 gallon tank I installed last summer in my 73 fj40. Mine went in without issue. I only had to dent in the tank slightly for shock clearance. I also built a cage for some protection. This is one of the best upgrades I have done to the 40.

I am interested in doing this on a BJ44...

...and I was hoping to know the ground to tank clearance for this tank on an initially stock vehicle.

Are there other options, like 15 gallon readily junkyard available tanks that will allow for better ground clearance.

I am not interested in spending 1k for MAF. I will neeed to drill holes into the tank to allow for heating elements for veggie oil for winters. I can handle that easily enough. I just want a good source for a solid manufactured tank made by a carmaker that will fit the BJ 44.

I was looking at the 13 gallon one. Slightly slimmer, better ground clearance, than the regular S-10 tank.
 
I ended up not going the s-10 route because of clearance issues, and how low it hangs. That 13 gal. one in the above link looks good, though. I've also heard a Suzuki Sidekick tank fits well, haven't seen one in person .I still want to get something back there for more range.:beer:
 
You can look up the suzuki tanks on that same site, they are about the same size. I may still do a tank someday, but got some jerry cans for now, 10 extra gallons gives me about 100 extra miles, possilby 150 in stockish trim, should help out.

The 87 and the mid 90s tank are identical except for the baffle. The 87 will be smooth on the bottom, and the mid 90s units will have a plastic baffle in the bottom. Reason being the mid 90s Blazers were equiped with efi instead of tbi. I tried this option when I went to Tuned port sbc but even after triming the body crossmember I could not achieve a fit that I was satisfied with. instead I used the OEM fj40 tank and a surge tank.

Would this give me enough clearance to run the bigger s-10 tank? Or should i do the 13 gallon one just to be safe? Although the 13 gallon one would not give me much range...

How easy is it to install the s-10 in the back? sorry guys, I'm real new at this... senior in high school and this is my first car, jsut got it a bit ago!
