Hello everyone,

I’m hitting my head against a wall as we speak.
I can’t seem to get the old girl running properly? I’m sure that I’m missing something here.
Car starts and stalls. Runs very rough and smells very rich of gasoline.
I deleted the EGR and plugged what I believe to be the lines no longer in service.
Can someone help get me back on track?

Thank you!

You're saying it was running fine before you did that?
I deleted the egr in addition to many other changes. I recently installed the engine back in the FJ80 after doing a refresh of gaskets and other parts.

Some things that jumped out at me:
You painted over the valve cover grommets and the PCV valve grommet. Were these replaced with new OEM parts??
The PCV valve is at an angle because the hose that runs back to the intake is too long. It's likely leaking air.
The top half of the 3FE wants to be air tight. Any air leaks from the valve cover or anywhere on the top half of the motor will play havoc with the A/F ratio.

Did you mess with the AFM at all?
Is the intake plenum in good shape without any cracks or tears?

Please read through this document:

I did not replace the PCV valve. That is my next move. Also looking at the fuel pressure regulator. But first things first I’ll take care of that grommet and PCV valve. Thanks!

Before you play with fuel pressure and other sensors, get to the low hanging fruit first. Any air leaks will cause issues.
Remember that this is a tractor motor with 1st generation fuel injection from 1986. All mechanicals MUST be correct first.
Please read through the doc I gave you.

Looks like the VSV for your fuel pressure regulator isn't hooked up. It should run without stalling without that hooked up but would be good to put back in.

Also check those vacuum lines running along intake tube, the lower one looks loose. Mine does that anytime I touch the air filter and is a big vacuum leak.

Hi guys,

You’re all correct! I need to go back to the basics. I was rushing the last 10% after a very long week of getting everything put back in the FJ. I will regroup and work the problem. Thank you for all the advice. I will take this one step at a time and I’m sure it’ll clear out the issue. Starting with valve cover PCV bale and grommet and bolt hole gaskets.

I’ll Keep you posted as I move forward.

Good catch. It looks like he removed all 3 VSVs that live on that bracket and plugged vac lines. The first 2 for AI and EGR I wouldn't worry about, but the FPR VSV can be an issue.
For the OPs reference, that's the 3rd one with the brown connector and the filter mounted on the bottom as shown below.

I’m not discounting any advice here. I am posing a question. The egr delete kit said to delete the entire bracket of which you speak? Maybe I did something incorrectly? I will double check my work. Thank you for the heads up!

Advice from @jonheld is invaluable, especially regarding these engines and systems.

Hi mate, attached I am providing a modified Desmogged vacuum hose information. Its based on the Toyota one, but its color coded for easier line following and I have marked the capped ones with cap icons.

I have spent much time reading thought many desmogged threads here in the forum, inspected countless photos and even bought a spare manifold so that I follow the vacuum lines and correctly decide which must be capped. I hope that it helps you.

Disclaimer: The diagram has not been peer reviewed yet by experienced 3FE forum members such as @jonheld so if there are errors, I will fix them and update it right away so that it can be used as future reference.

It was running well before I pulled it. Just turned 200K miles. Just refreshed it while I had the transmission out in order to replace torque converter and filter. Had a few items that needed attention such as cooling system and gaskets for oils leaks. Front rear main seal oil pan gasket etc.

Update:
I pulled the hose for the PCV valve and it was loose on the valve cover side. Some fluid came out when I pulled the hose which makes me think it is definitely stuck in the closed position? I am replacing the hose and PCV valve today. Then I’ll check to see if that improved thing.

Why are you deleting the EGR or other emmisions devices when you live in the state of California. Sounds like you will have trouble passing any visual inspection during testing.
My LLC takes care of registration out of state. Not worried about smog. Looking to simplify and cleanup engine space for compressor/extra battery.
