did you do a compression test to confirm?
Well, ummm, you see, life has kinda been in the way and I haven't :D

I started digging into this over Christmas break and Jon was super helpful and knowledgeable, (as he always is!) and recommended that I adjust the valves and do a compression test. Did the valves, ran out of nice weather (it was 75° for a whole week) and then classes started again. 🙄

Hoping to get working on it soon.

(Sorry for the long response)

I noticed you have removed the air injection hard lines during DESMOG. Did you plug the holes on top of the block? Might be worth revisiting.
I plugged the hole in the air injection holes on top of the block with threaded Allen screws that came with the kit. I’ll check for leaks but they were tightened pretty good.

I think you did but you replaced your PCV in the valve cover right?
If you’re pulling an O2 sensor code, I’d replace them. I did when I did my transmission swap and the truck seems to run happier for sure.

Yes. That’s the first thing I did besides replacing vacuum lines. I replaced the PCV valve grommet and valve cover bolt rubber washers in addition to the fuel pressure regulator.
I’m thinking it’s actually due to an exhaust leak? Does that make sense for my current symptoms?

can you describe the issues you are having with your 3FE again?
Starts up with higher rpm stays running rough but then immediately dies if I let the rpm go down to idle. Smells very rich. Also backfires occasionally. Wonder if the plugs are fouled now?

I have a pretty good exhaust leak and my truck runs great. You'll track it down eventually. Have you pulled vacuum on it? I forget. Valve adjustment, O2 sensors, fuel filter.

I have replaced the fuel filter and I just ordered an 02 sensor. Have not done a valve adjustment.

There should be two O2 sensors.

I was going through videos of the engine starting for the first time and found a video of the engine idling and NOT dying. I had not done any of these repairs at this point either.
I don’t know what could’ve changed between then and now for it to start dying?
When I first started the engine after putting her back in the truck it ran and idled without dying? Now it won’t idle at all. Is there any thing about this that sparks a potential cause to people?

Curious, if you rev it, is it sluggish to go up (meaning the rpms)?
Yes, it is sluggish. Timing seems to be off based on backfiring and also acting like a vacuum leak based on rich fuels smell and stalling. I am trying to isolate one thing at a time. Maybe it’s all one sensor or wire. I’m also going to check the engine ground wires.
Short answer is yes. It does rev up slowly when I throttle up.

I know this is a little out there, but FWIW

I'm not crazy... 3fe cam gear slipped 10 degrees - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/im-not-crazy-3fe-cam-gear-slipped-10-degrees.907062/

There is another thread linked on page 2 that has more info.
I guess it could be. I had the timing cover off while the engine was out of the truck and they both looked good. No chips or missing teeth etc. doesn’t mean it couldn’t have had a catastrophic failure while turning her over again.

Well I’m very embarrassed to say it but I had the wrong firing order the entire time. She’s running again without stalling. Just gotta button up some loose ends and I should be back in business. Thanks for all the tips. I feel stupid but happy it wasn’t something big.
