Got the iKamper Skycamp 3.0. In a word, quality. It really does setup in 1-2 minutes.

It's twice as much weight as my previous RTT, but I think it will be a worthwhile trade. I have it on 4x stock cross bars. Was hoping it'd mount lower and closer to the roofline but this works.

Looking forward to using it later this month.

I would like to spend a couple days with one of these. I have their x cover and it’s a fantastic tent for my trailer. I wouldn’t want it on top of a rig though.

The sky camp has always been on the top of my list for a hard shell side open.

That hits the nail on the head for me. Any RTT is great until having to set one up that is almost 7 ft in the air.

I agree. My first was a eezi awn 1800 on my crew short truck on top of a camper shell. Spent a bunch of nights in it, it wasn’t that bad. Also crawled on top of the truck almost every time I packed up.
Stepped up to my quick pitch wedge. 30 seconds setup and done.
Now have it and a trailer because kids haha.

Pic for the thread, on a trip with another couple. We towed their camper and then slept in the tent for 7 nights through the smokies between Christmas and New Years.

Looks great! Just curious, any adapters needed to mount on stock cross bars?

There is some complexity here that I need to finish sorting out.

1) The iKamper Skycamp bracket 3.0s are too tall and will contact the roofline as is. They are about 2.375" and there's only about 2.25" clearance from the top of the stock cross bars to the roofline. I modified the brackets by bending the lower part to reduce height to ~1.75".

2) The OEM siderails have a bow, so when using more than 2 crossbars, they're not on the same plane, so need spacers. I made some 3D printed plastic spacers.

Thanks for the pics, I've been wondering about the mounting hardware for the 3.0 mini prior to purchasing my rails. Trying to achieve the lowest profile mounting that I can but the flush rails on my LX makes things a bit more complicated. Debating wether or not to just do a platform instead of the 3 cross bars.
My rails have 3 attachment points that would work well for bars but I also need to consider removal and re-mounting accessibility.

How are you reaching the fasteners front and rear? What is that plate in the first pic? Any more photos would be great thanks.

BTW has anyone tried the 2022 GX hardware?
I caught a glimpse of these and they look to be the lowest profile OEM ive seen for you guys with elevated rails.

My goal is also to keep the tent as low as possible. The stock rack is pretty low profile compared to most aftermarket. It's also the most refined in aero, weather, quiet, etc. Interestingly the cross rails aren't just ovals, but are teardrop in profile. All reasons that make it worthwhile for me to keep.

I do want the RTT quickly removable and the bracket 3.0s are well designed for that. They provide a long 5mm? hex tool to reach and secure the brackets from the front and rear.

The plate is my homebrewed rotopax mount that stays in place.

These looks like rebrands of the Rhino-Rack Vortex Bar system. I actually bought my Skycamp through Rhino Adventure Gear as they were an authorized local vender. They suggested these bars to me and said they are robust and 2 would do the deed for the Skycamp. They do raise the tent a couple more inches.

Not sure it will help to the discussion but here are my 2.0 brackets held up to my round bars. And I could not get them to slide under my OEM crossbars even at the highest point.

Those 3.0 clamps definitely got redesigned i guess? Would be awesome to see a quick clamp system though. Along hex is fine im sure but like its a four grand tent lol.

How do they secure to the tent channels BTW? Do you guys see any creative opportunities?

2.0 and 3.0 differ in that the clamping screw is under the cross bar in the 2.0, while the 3.0 has it above and in the RTT channel.

The 3.0 probably has a speed advantage. @coleAK can confirm but I imagine with the 2.0, have to back the screw completely out to clamp on the cross bar, then align/thread said screw, and tighten.

3.0 is just drop on the cross bar and tighten. It's a good system and I'll try to take a picture of it later to clarify.

Yes with the 2.0 have to back the screw entirely out to install/remove. It is very easy though since both sides are on pivot mounts. The biggest advantage I see with a 3.0 is that everything can stay attached, as it would be harder to just lose one piece like the screw or one side of the foot.

And both are likely head over heals better than the clamping systems I've had the pleasure to use in other RTTs.

I’d highly recommend the GFC. My biggest concern was durability and keeping the roof height to a minimum. The GFC accomplished both. I originally mounted it on a Front Runner rack, but it was incredibly tall. After some research, I opted for the K9 system, and used their rails and feet and modified the GFC universal bars to bolt to the K9 feet. This achieved just enough clearance for the sunroof to open, but kept the tent as low as possible. The GFC is light (~125lbs), fast to deploy, built like an aircraft and does not need to be removed, and comfortable. For some added cushion we run an Exped Duo mattress and it sleeps like home.

The eBay Chinese knock off special. I had to try it 🤷🏽‍♂️ I think it was $1700 with local pickup. I have only used it about 8 nights, but good bang for the buck. I think it weighs about 140 lbs. I used PayPal and eBay has a guarantee. I was going to to send it back asap if it was complete junk 🤣. Less than half what I was considering spending for a roof nest.

Man that looks good. My wife has the exact same model and color. Great looking vehicle all around, love the clean look. Was going to ask about how it handles the weight with AHC, but it looks like you have made lots of mods to handle that per your sig. Did you do a sensor lift at all?
