Wow, very clean and well thought out. Thanks for doing the writeup!

very nice rig! It looks more like a show truck then a trail truck!

question: i am contemplating going to the 6 inch lift, but some have been discouraging it saying it's too high and makes the rig too tippy? They say back it down to a 4 inch lift. If you were doing it over again, would you go back to a 6 inch lift or a little lower?

good to see others that werent scared of the slee 6" lift

Thanks again for all the feedback guys, I really appreciate it!

I'm sure it does look a little like that. I have spent alot of time on it and try to make everything look as good as possible while maintaining functionality as my foremost objective. Hopefully you can tell from the pics I've posted over the last year or so that I'm not afraid to use it and abuse it :D

I knew, even before I actually owned an 80 that I wanted a 6" lift (the details on that can be found in my last ROTW). I have never had one day of regret and do not feel as if the vehicle is any more "tippy" than a smaller lift would be. When it was stock, it would wallow through the turns with it's stock soft suspension. It never gave me a warm and fuzzy feeling. Every vehicle I've owned has handled better and felt tighter (handling wise) prior to the 80.

I have essentially never even experienced this rig with sway bars! I still feel very much in control as I have become accustomed to it's strengths and weaknesses and drive accordingly.

I would focus more on whether you want to deal with the bigger expense, possibility of vibrations, the need for bigger tires and ultimately the fact that you have now opened yet a larger door of "want, want, want"

did you buy the complete kit or piece it together?

I'm with you in the fact that just after i purchased my truck, i said i'm going 6" for sure. I just haven't had the extra coin to pull the trigger.

I see from your pics you do use it; awesome. I was just meaning it looks really good for what it is.

I bought the "whole" kit all at once. I added a couple of skids and the axle to caliper brake lines in with my initial purchase as well.

I hear ya from the financial standpoint; I had had my 4Runner paid off for years so it wasn't too bad getting into a little debt again:D. I was really missing the time that I had spent with good friends, wheeling and camping. I had to get back into it. And how better to back into it? Buy an 80!!!

I have the same rig and am seriously leaning towards the same end. I think actually seeing it on essentially the same rig has sealed the deal. I mean its so nice that you even modeled it in the same color for me. Thx

Now just have to find the wife a Highlander and I am ready.

That's a wrap people,
nothing to see here....keep moving....

Now give me back my keys and quit telling people it's "your " truck....c'mon now....

I recognize the area in those first couple shots. The parking lot off of Mast @ Mission Trails.

It amazes me how good your truck always looks. We've gone through many of the same trails and my rig looks like poo-poo in comparison. Maybe I should wash my rig more often.

Ah, very perceptive my friend. It's just a few blocks from my house.

Obviously the camera doesn't depict all of the pinstriping though:D

And yes, a good wash and wax wouldn't hurt:flipoff2:

Since we are on the topic of mounting stuff...can you tell me about your CB? lol. How did you mount that? It looks like an exact fit.

I'm in the market for a low profile CB and that looks like a great set up.

Thanks!
Jeff

Steve,

what are you using to mount your garmin? I have the same unit and am trying to figure out the best way to mount it.

Thanks

Well, has it been a year already? I suppose so. Since I already did an ROTW about a year ago to the day, I will bypass a lot of the info I covered then and basically call this a status update. The things I have done in the last year may not have as pronounced a visual change as in the first year but rest assured; I’ve been dilligently working my weekends away on my rig.

I have found that just about any project I take on seems to take about one month. Drawer system, one month. Rear bumper, one month. Complete axle rebuild, one month. You get the idea.

I can’t forget to leave out my two best friends in the world, my copilots, Zeus and Zoey (the Dober’s)

Here is what I have done so far:

  • Slee 6” lift
  • Slee F & R CV driveshaft’s
  • All metal parts powder coated semi-flat black
  • Rear shock mounts extended 1.25”
  • Slee brake lines (complete set)
  • Slee Shortbus bumper (last year I had an ARB and a Warn 12K winch)
  • Slee transfer skid
  • Slee jack tool system
  • 35” (315) Toyo MT’s
  • Hanna Quality slider’s
  • 4X4 Labs rear bumper kit wit tire and 3 jerry can holder ( I added a lot of personal touches including a different latch, hiding the swing out stops and rounding over all sharp corners, including bullnosing the recovery points)
  • Garmin GPS with console mount
  • Uniden 520 CB
  • Antenex CB antenna
  • Longfield birfs and inner axles
  • Poly Performance rear axles
  • 5.29 gears from Ringpinion.biz
  • Gears and bearings cryo treated by Bobby Long
  • Solid pinion spacers front and rear
  • All gear work done by ZUK
  • All Amsoil in axles
  • New brakes all around with 100 pads
  • Factory cupholder
  • Factory hand throttle
  • Center diff lock switch
  • Pin 7 mod
  • Hoses, Belts, gaskets…
  • Custom rear drawer system (including 500lb. BB slides, 6 tie down anchors bracketed to body, 2 storage cavities w/lids and all Line-X’ed for durability

Here is what I’m in the middle of:

  • A/C dryer relocation (thanks MOT)
  • Scangauge II (on the way)
  • Yellow box (need to order)
  • 4X4 Labs relay rod and drag link with 1 ton ball joints
  • Inchworm front E-locker guard, thanks Boston Mangler! (hopefully it fits with the 4X4 labs stuff)
  • P/S cooler with supplemental fan
  • Rear storage for 2nd row seating area

Here are some of my future mods I’m thinking about

  • Custom built aluminum roof rack
  • Ham radio
  • 37’s with Walker Evans beadlocks
  • Hydro assist
  • Winch with synthetic line
  • Lighting
  • LED interior lights
  • Stereo with ipod inputs
  • Slee rear E-locker guard
  • Electric fan or blue fan clutch

So, without any further ado, here are some pics of how she looks today (on a clean day):

Which Garmin model are you running...hard to see in the photo. Is it the 60CSx? How do you like it? Bye the way, bad ass truck!

what are you using to mount your garmin?

It's just the Garmin car mount. I got it when I got my GPS. I like it but the GPS does bounce around quite a bit; I've just gotten used to it.

can you tell me about your CB? lol. How did you mount that? It looks like an exact fit.

Yes that's where I got the idea but I did my install a little differently. The Slee article basically just involves a pressure fit in the hole.

I actually fabbed up some brackets to hold it square and straight in the hole. It's also solid as a rock in there with the brackets.
