I like the valve covers! They beat my rusting chrome import crap jobs.

I bet you won't have to dent the #1 header tube to clear the steering rod with all that space in a 60 bay. Try it with a 40 series...

BTW thanks for doing this build, now I can get some learnin' when I want to go through mine and do upgrades. Only thing I've done is change spark plugs and a matched Edelbrock intake for the Q-jet. Didn't even think of doing work to match up ports.

AND I've been working on the bike too... still gotta paint the wheels. Great bike for $500 even if it is a Kan-a-Tuna:

hey atleast you don't have a bandit...all the same weaknesses of the katana but ten times as hard to find parts for and more expensive and less desireable for resell...i'm currently rewiring my whole 96 bandit 600 with a katana harness and cdi and coils...

It's looking great.

I will be starting the same project this fall when my 60 gets the 402 and a 700r4. Your thread will be a great reference when i need some info. I just can't imagine what it will feel like to drive a 60 with all that HP...:steer:

Keep it coming..

Not sure, they are cast and use the same size valves you are using. The only description I got (haven't removed covers in forever) is- "big oval port heads machined to accept 2.19/1.88 Manley valves." The block is a '70 Chevelle SS 4-bolt, not sure if that narrows head choices.

It feels pretty good in a heavy ass 45 on 37s. :D Looking forward to your build, I have a 700r4 to do next.

you are going to put a 700r4 behind a 454 ?

Not a 454, but a early 70's 402 BBC.

I have a neighbor that builds 3 or 4 street rods a year and he seems to use the 700r4 behind BBC's when he builds a car with an automatic. Have never heard a complaint from him about their reliability. Granted they are not junkyard 700r4's, they get a nice rebuild and beefed up.

The 56 chevy wagon my neighbor has kept around for himself for about the last 5 years has a 502 with a 700r4 behind and he has not had a problem that i have heard. And he kies to use the skinny pedal.

I am always open to new info, and if there is something that makes a 700r4 a bad choice for a cruiser let me know. I just want to OD as much as anything and i am hoping i don't have put a 1000$ into a transmission.

Any and all comments are welcome
thanks Chris

If your under 300hp and under 400lbs of torque the 700r4 with just a few upgrades would work alright. Anything more than that and you need about 1500-2000$ of upgrades to make a 700 strong enough. At that point it would almost be worth buying a 4l80e and buying an aftermarket controller.

Thats about exactly the same height I mounted my motor, except that you mounted yours a lot farther back than I did. Did you have to do a lot to the firewall? I know on mine with the motor farther forward than that I didn't have to touch the firewall at all but it was a tight squeeze to get it to fit in.

yeah, I did some "clearance work" with a BFH. There is a couple more little spots than need some further "adjusting" but nothing earth shaking... I SHOULD have enough room for a mechanical fan but I havent got that far yet (currerntly building a play structure in the backyard) to be sure. Should be able to get back to the cruiser in the next week or so.

The more I ride the Katana the more I like it. Sure its not as fast as the "true sport bikes" but its more comfortable and its got plenty on the top to get your blood moving. Like I said... its a great bang for buck bike.

Yeah man mechanical fan is the way to go. With that and making a different radiator fit its just barely enough that I can take the fan clutch off if I needed to. I have like 3/4 of an inch clearance. Are you still doing propane?

Yep, still propane. I shouldnt loose too much mileage or power now that I've set up the motor to burn it more efficiently. My cruiser is a toy more than anything else so propane makes the most sense for me.

Well if I was going for mileage I wouldn't be putting in a bone stock 454. The motor was basically free and I needed a new drive train, plus a 454 will be sick dude. I'm interested to see how yours does on propane. How much longer till you think you have yours driving?

yeah, I think having a big block in a cruiser is cool whether is stock or built.... either way it makes way more sense than the 2F :). Honestly, if I could just have another two or three free weekends with no distractions I bet I could finish. I've got just about everything I need except for time... I'd like to get the motor turned over in the next few weeks and get the cruiser on the road before I leave for Ireland in Sept. (I'll bet there for a couple weeks for work).
