Found an FJ62 with a hand throttle and a grab bar in my local junkyard.

Had to post some cruiserporn!

Freaking awesome stuff.

Just took a short drive.

All I can say is WOW!

If you are turning left and right and left to go straight like I was, go get your steering box rebuilt, you will be amazed how well your 60 can drive!

I can let go of the wheel and it just stays put, and the slop in the steering is much tighter.

Don't over-tighten the adjustment screw, the guy who rebuilt mine said it had never been touched. Which he said was a good thing. He said over-adjustment can lead to more problems.

I need to replace the TRE on the pitman arm end or would filling it grease do the trick? It kinda wiggles.

Can you elaborate on the steering box rebuild? What was the total cost of the rebuild? What was done to the box when it was rebuilt? I know they resealed it, but what else was included? Does this place do steering boxes that are mailed in?

Thanks,
Zack

They pulled it apart, cleaned it, inspected the internals, replaced anything that needed replacing, put it back together, tested it.

They also painted it.

You can call them and ask if they would do a mail in.

The price ran about $250 I think. I am happy with their work and they said if I had any problems to let them know.

I think it was pretty reasonable considering I did just about nothing haha

Thanks for the pics of the linkage! thats awesome. i want one!

Hey guys!

I finally got my Man-A-Fre Stainless Steel brake lines installed. Very nice quality. I had to file one bracket on the front axle to get the part to fit properly. No harm done. Worth it.

Now I can actually flex my suspension :D

Little line to the knuckle

How I used the clips Man-A-Fre included. And the stock clip in the original spot.

Old, cracked, and plain worn out!

Also I tightened up my Tie Rod Ends because I noticed they were loose, love the easy fixes!

Been working on the cruiser lately.

The transfer-case was leaking everywhere but the front output. The engine was leaking from the galley plug behind the bell housing.

Got everything apart a couple days ago. Been running to the dealer for parts. Free shipping and the prices aren't that bad. Especially for the odd things I need.

On with the pics!

Nasty bugger

Rear output was hard as a rock. It broke when I took it out.

Moved the rest of the pics and text to post #131

Stole the "feet" idea from Kynot 62. Thanks Tony!

Failed transmission to transfercase seal. Yes there is a hole in it.

Cleaned up with BBQ Grill cleaner! Must be some nasty chemicals in that haha

Cleaned up and starting to reassemble

The new plug for the back of the motor. I bought two just in case.

About to head back out there. t-case wants some gears back in it :)

^^^ Content above continued from post #128 ^^^

Looking good. Must be nice to know those leaks will be gone.

Yeah leaks suck. IH8LEAKS

Excellent. How do you get the old plug out?

I haven't yet :hillbilly:

Probably gonna drill a hole in it and pry it out with a screwdriver. I don't think it'll be too hard to get out.

I really like the detail of that H-N-L shifter arm. It's awesome.

FSM kicks boo-tay btw.

I'm gonna work on that engine plug tomorrow.

Beautiful truck and great car for your bro!! I am still reading through the thread but did he ever Silvia the front end? And why did he go with the 18DET? I would have gone with the SR20DET (bluebird edition)for the little extra top end. Was into ricers for a while but gave up after moving to N. NV (kinda hard to drive one of those in the snow!!)

Thanks!

My Twin never really liked it as much as I did, he made an agreement with my Dad, $4000 towards a project car.

What my brother's car looks like today.

CA18DET motorswap, 5 lug conversion w/ 300zx brakes, solid rear sub-frame bushings, lsd from correct era matching the engine, lowered (a lot), 17 inch wheels, side skirt's, rear valence, spoiler, full 3 inch exhaust. Thing has a lot done to it. All built on a $500 shell :) That was fun to work on that thing.

Sadly my Dad sold the Targa before I was born :frown:

Your giant a$$ 60 fits under 7ft?! I'd be freaking out man.

Thanks GLTHFJ60!

gregnash, my brother went with the CA18DET because it was it was cheaper and he just felt like doing it. SR is a lot more common. This is unique. It's a really fun car.

Here is a newer photo of it with Blitz Type 03 Wheels

Now back to the 60

Got that old plug out. I just drove in the center with a punch and it loosened up and came out. My machine shop did replace it. It was an aftermarket plug that was already driven in too far. Hence the leaking. The Toyota plug is much thicker, kinda hard to hammer in. I'm including two photos one of the blank hole and one of the plug I installed. I can't really get it to flatten out.

The marks are from the wheel stud I used to install it. Shouldn't really impact anything I hope. I have another one just in case :) I also put a very light coat of silicon around it. I'm scared this is gonna leak once I have it back together.

I never updated this....

:D

I got the leaks fixed. Been driving it around. Took it to Hidden Falls before I went back to school and dented it. Sucks, but I'll get it fixed in the future. Along with a paint job. That will be a costly experience. Then no more tight trails for me. I don't like denting my 60 its a :princess:

Notice how nothing was broken. Gas door is fine. Tail light lens is fine. Side marker is fine. Just got some nasty dents.

Ouch! Unfortunately that won't just buff out. Looks like it'll pop out fairly easily with a stud puller though. This last year I bought a weld-on stud puller to work on my FJ40. All I'll say is that the days of drilling and pulling are long gone! A cool side benefit to them is that they shrink the metal, so as long as your dent isn't crazy you can get away with very little filler.

Those pics make me sad! Since your truck is so rust free and clean, I would stay far far away from any trails!

Zack

Dude I would be crying if I did that to Brown
