Climbing at 6500 ft in 3rd gear doesn't make people behind you happy with a diesel.

Been there. I just put a turbo on mine and wow what a difference. It really isn't that tough to do, and the difference is night and day. Well worth the investment, IMO. My total cost for putting in my turbo was under $500. Lots of write ups on it, and I have info in my build thread in my sig if you're interested. Have fun on the trip!

Here we go

Funny, I always assumed that was a rhetorical question. Pity they don't ask whether one would like to avoid paved roads.

Driving into death valley was a very pleasant experience since the 40 doesn't have a radio the exhaust drone of the 3b and the whine of the h55f transmission on deceleration was music to my ears. Seeing this sign I was glad I was driving a diesel powered toyota.

Shortly there after I saw a grim reminder of what watching too much scenery will yield you.

Bad water basin left a bad taste in my mouth.

It was getting late in the day at this point so I made camp at emigrant camp ground 2100'. As I was setting up a red 40 with a roof rack passed by headed west bound toward panamint springs.

Prepared a quick meal after the long day and dozed off to bed

The next morning I got up and got a quick shower at stove pipe wells and explored the sand dunes that were near by. Sorry no pics. After that I drove over to Beatty Nevada to top off the fuel and for some breakfast at a place called Mel's diner. Unfriendly waitress there but the food was pretty good. I wondered to myself if people are generally less friendly here than the South or possibly the "help wanted" sign in the window had something to do with her demeanor. Leaving Beatty I explored rheolite ghost town which had a very interesting hill I attempted to climb. Not sure what was on top and being far from home, I was cautious and only eased up until the rocks limited my traction and I backed down. Going up to the hill was a small ditch where I flexed the OME suspension for the first time. I was very impressed.

Bit of a drive for the first flex. We've got some great stuff in Santa Fe; I could have saved you 1,000 miles :-)

Looks great. What's your range now with that tank and the 3b?

After rheolite I turned onto Titus canyon road simply because it appeared to be a short cut to Scotty's castle and also passed by Leadfield which was another ghost town. The road was amazing with steep switch backs going through the mountain passes. I was amazed with the scenery as I entered Titus canyon. I must say this is a must see for anyone going to death valley and I was astonished that I had never even heard of it before.

Thanks! You know driving conservatively I think I can go 600 miles but there has been little of that this trip. I also need to determine my odometer descrepency with the 33" tires.

Should be about 12 percent under. So at 60 indicated you ought to be doing about 68. That's what mine has worked out to be.

Interesting country and quality pics.

Thanks Roma
