Couple of things to note, in 85 the front bearing retainer changed on the h55. This one came from a Dec 84 build bj70 so it takes the earlier seal and gasket. Secondly, the retainer bolts go through the trans housing so they need sealant on the threads. Lastly, note to self to photograph the finished product next time around.

My paint showed up a couple days early so it was time to get this thing cleaned up.

I got the extension housing removed and made a mess, need to get this thing suspended and cleaned up for paint. I may get the extension housing in the blaster if I can take everything off of it. The tcase is ready to go on so no hold up there.

I was pleased to find the 5th gear selector arm seal to be in the Terrain Tamer kit but shortly after I realized the kit was missing the extension housing to tcase gasket. Luckily I had ordered another tcase kit from Georg a couple weeks ago and it had the gasket I needed. I'll have to get a replacement one for that kit now but time is on my side.

You can see the different colored gasket from this kit. I've used Terrain Tamer kits in the past but this time around he sent me a Sumo kit. I've used both suppliers knuckle kits before and actually prefer the Sumo ones.

I rebuilt this case a few months ago so it's ready to be assembled.

Was hoping to get this thing one hundred percent done this evening but just ran out of steam. During to week I usually don't get in the garage until I get the kids down so it's not always productive. Need to set the rear preload and get the top cover back on.

Do you have the parts numbers for the seal and gasket for a post-85 H55F? We're cleaning up a later production H55F that'll be going into one of the FJ60s.
Jim, try 33132-60020 for the gasket and 90311-32013 for the seal.

Preload came out to 17 inch pounds with the old shim which is right on the money for new bearings.

I ordered a new joint for tcase selector arm as well as a new bushing for the tcase lever. I need to powder coat some parts next week so I'll probably redo this lever.

Got the trans back in this evening, man what a pain with no transmission jack. 10 min job with a trans jack and lift, took me probably an hour. I used a floor jack and three ratchet straps. Did save myself a little trouble by jacking up the 40 and just rolling the trans under.

Turns out I had a powder coated shifter in my stash already so got it installed this morning.

The easiest way to drop the trans on this thing is to remove the tcase lever and the cotter pin is a little hard to reach so I installed this hair pin cotter instead.

With a new u joint in hand I started on the rear driveshaft. I bought two new joints but the tcase side joint feels perfect. Decided not to replace that one.
