Hey everyone. Just bought my 88 pickup and the guy I bought it from said he narrowed the 4 wheel drive problem down to the ring gear inside of the front pumpkin. I was wondering if anyone has changed this before and has any tips? I think I found the ring gear online and was wondering if someone could look and make sure it is the right one. Thanks!!

What sort of problems are you having with the 4WD?

That gear you linked is the starter gear that is pressed on to the flywheel at the back of the engine. It has nothing to do with the drivetrain.

I've changed many ring & pinion gear sets, it's not something you can do without a lot of wrenching experience and some special tools.

To be honest i'm not sure of the actual problem, I tried to get the truck started last night but it was being weird and I was too cold to want to do anything. But basically the seller told us that he narrowed the problem down to the ring gear inside of the front pumpking because the other stuff was working...idk I mean I need to do some troublshooting myself but was curious if anyone had ever taken one of the front pumpkins apart and knew what was going on inside. Do you happen to know which part i'm referring to or can you explain any better or is my explanation a little vague lolol?

The ring gear is in the front differential. But there are a lot of other things I'd check before it if I was having issues with the front axle - hubs, CVs, etc. As KLF says, more details are needed on what the problem is.

Yeah that's what I figured. would you guys do me a favor and attach a link to the part that is the ring gear on the front differential? Thank you!!!

Same part as the ring gear in the rear differential.

And, honestly, if you don't even know what a ring gear is you really need to start with some basics before going any further. Start watching some episodes of Xtreme4x4: http://www.powerblocktv.com/shows/?show=XT

You'll pick up a lot of beginner's information about components and options and all.

Ring and pinion, ring gear. Same stuff. Pinion gear is the small gear that turns the ring rear.

Repairing/replacing a ring & pinion is a very expensive project. Make absolutely certain that is the problem before throwing that much money at the truck.

Maybe the problem he's having is that the front and rear gear ratios are missmatched. I had the same issue with my 79 when I bought it. It had 5.29:1 in the rear. And 4.11:1 in the front. It would drag the front tires whenever I engaged the 4x4. This destroyed the bearings on the rear differential.

Like the other guys said, it is a little expensive to do this job, but if you set it up right. It should be well worth it.

I'd make sure it's not the locking hubs before tear into the diff.

If it does end up being the R&P, I would just try to find a new IFS (7.5inch) chunk and swap it in.
