Yeah i dont understand why it's so hard to just throw out the CTT mounting hardware and just bolt it through the CTT floor to our roof racks. It's going to be hella stronger than just two Yakima pipes anyhow with the entire CTT being supported with a complete floor.

I will be doing the same as Kevin but on my INTI instead... i'll post up too after i copy his LOL

well, if you're going to be bolting through the floor, you better check carefully where the frame is and use that, cuz the flooring plates are surely not enough to hold things in place...

The brackets on the bottom of my CTT must be made for Thule bars.. they're way too short for the Yakimas. I ended up getting some U-Bolts at Lowes and drilled through the edges, through the aluminum frame. This method appears much more secure than those little brackets anyway, which are just held on by three little rivets.

Nak, pretty bold to drill through the frame. May weaken it. Why didn't you just run the Ubolt across the frame member at a 45deg angle and across the bar. No need to drill. Much stronger.

added: that's how I run all my cross bars on roof racks etc. Isn't moving at all.

I don't think I follow... you saying get the u-bolt to straddle the frame of the tent somehow? So you'd still have to drill one side through the floor of the tent, and the other end of the u-bolt is outboard of the tent altogether?

I'm not worried about weaking this thing (obviously). If it bends, it wouldn't be the worst thing to drill all those rivets out, pop off the bottom masonite, then yank the aluminum and replace it with something substantial.. or just scrap the bottom board altogher and bolt the sleeping surface down to the floor of a real roof rack. I hope I use this enough to challenge its durability.. :)

I ordered one of these tents. Soon I'll have it on one of my roof racks. I think it's going to work really well. The bottom brakets on the tent will have to go. I'll replace them with bolts going from the tent down to through the roof rack. Similar tp what nakman has done, but the rack will be attached to the roof rack.
The rack is wider than the tent (when closed). When I do the install I'll take some pics.

Regards

Alvaro

that's right. If you have 2 bars one on top of the other and perpendicular, you can put the UBolt at a 45 and tie the 2 together that way. If the bars are 1" say, the Ubolt would have to have legs apart by over 1.5". You'll have one leg outside and the other through the flooring of the CTT. This way no drilling though the frame. :)

I'm not following this closely but I feel like I missed something. So you chose the tent over the African Outback rack?

Cool. I was interested to see how you were going to adapt the two to work together. Oh well.

Rack is where it's at.... :D

Check my writeup again, i ended up mounting it to the rack afterall

For each is own!

Personally, I think a lot of people are buying them lately for the "Coolness" factor rather then for practicality as most often they are EMPTY!

That has many similar design elements the Eazi and Hannibals do. Looks like same netting, same canvas, same rain flies.. compare with the pic at the bottom of Slee's page of tents.

Kinda on the fence here about purchasing a roof-top tent.

I currently have a ARB 3/4 rack. Will "any" of the roof top tents of any brand actually mount in/on my ARB rack? Or am i going to have to buy a different rack for a tent?

It'll fit if you don't mind it being higher or if you are prepared to chop off any siderails in the way...

The mount for at least Hannibal is drilling through the wood floor and bolting the thing to your rack.. simple and effective.

The real issue is chopping up your rack sides. Hannibal made that efficient because the back part of the rack rails are removable. Now this is the "small" Hannibal.. the large one is the width of the entire rack and makes the rack Slee sells a more attractive route. The rack Slee sells has no sides as an option. However if you want to hang the fold-over type tents off the sides, you'll have to cut rails of a traditional rack like the ARB... or as e9999 alluded to, you'll have to raise the tent up even higher to clear the side rails of the rack.

I myself like the fold-over style vs the fiberglass shell style because you can still keep a lot of gear up there.. or you can put 2 tents up there- one folds over the hood and the ladder attaches to the bullbar and the other over the back hatch, ladder to the ground. More options. :D

Only steers and queers are from TEXAS....

oh yeah and roof top tents too ;D

Arrived today. Just got done installing it. Bolted mine straight to the INTI rack.
Drilled out the rivets on the factory mounting brackets and took them off. Also,
removed the eyelits that were on the bottom of the tent too. Drilled straight through
the floor and through the aluminum frame into my aluminum floor. Used two small
plates on the back with some large 3/4" self tappers and drilled them in horizontally.
The tent aint goin' anywhere.

Drove home, barely even knew the thing was up there. The NATO cans already block the wind anyways. The tent weighs 120lbs.. so it's not even that noticeable in the top heavy category.

Stoked to try it out. Not stoked to get out of it in the middle of the night drunk to take a leak.
