that and I want to steal that fly design as it looks like it would work perfectly on the mobasa

I was just thinking the same thing. I bought a tarp that I may just drape over the mombasa. A poor man's rain fly. Will post pics when it happens.

Wheres your test happenin Semlin ?

A good friend of mine owns a custom uphosltery biz. and he was really impressed with the workmanship - he figured any shop could make up some custom rain covers (or sew in a permanant top similar to this set up) very easily so I would check with your local boat top guys - most do great work, know the right materials and are used to odd custom stuff.

I really think this tent will be suitable for most any conditions - we have a heavy rain and wind warning today/tonight so one more extreme test coming...

yup, seems like it would be easy to sew/glue a couple of extensions on the CTT and stick a couple of fiberglass rods somehow in there...

check the link in my post. it leads to a thread about a run up at harrison involving a bunch of landcruisers, several of whom own RTTs.

and yes, i have a guy doing tops for my boat this fall so I was thinking the same thing.

nice tent Dan.
I saw that one on ebay and was going to bid on it, but didn't want to deal with the hassle of getting it across the border...

good to know it ended up with a forum member. :D

Harrison is my backyard - I'd likely be in - would be the first outing in the 80 that i finally pick up this Friday. I'll check the link out.

that is a terrific price on a roofy.

But i love the hard shell, low profiile, and the straight up and down by hand crank set-up that the magiollina has. But it is way pricey. :crybaby:

so which way to i go? save money, cut corners, spend extra money that isn't needed....??

I REALLY like the Magiollina too, but the price is way out of my comfort zone for a tent, plus, we all love to "mod" our stuff and I feel a whole lot better modding a $325 tent then a $2k tent :D

GRR nothing in ten days.. I think it only takes 7 days from CA to HI via boat.

15 days in Mexico, super high winds, sand and a little bit-o-rain, my CTT pretty much rocked.

There are some things I would change, 1st being the s***ty ladder.

Sorry for the expletive, but the ladder is, well...s***TY.

The only other complaint is the stupid cover you have to put on and take off everytime you setup. Hardshell would be nice but for the price, I will use the cover. I got mine for $400 cash with no shipping, and for that price, you cannot beat it.

I am looking into finding a telescoping aluminum ladder to replace the steel, pin-ridden one that came with it. It is sturdy enough as my 200+ lbs climbed up and down it 100 times but it just does not feel right.

Another positive is that it is HUGE! I could have stacked up multiple girls in there with no problemo! Of course, my GF would not have appreciated that...:D

Anyhoo...here are a couple of action photos.

Don't dispair :) UPS will get it to you sooner or later...UPS held mine up for nearly a week looking for the second 'piece'. I explained to them that there was only 1 'piece' (confirmed this with Mel also) but they kept insisting that the BOL stated there were 2 pcs shipped. Best I can figure is they considered the pallet a separate piece because I only ended up with on RTT

I finaly convinced UPS after being stone walled for almost a week to deliver what they had. They did and I have not heard from them since ;p

AO Rack and CTT

Yes, sir.

I would have kept mine but it didn't fit on my African Outback rack, which took priority. Advantage, Grogan.

TJK

I wanted to buy an AO rack for my CTT. Can you tell us why it won't work. At first glance it look like it should work. Thanks...

Is anyone other than myself installing one of these on a 40? I would love to see a few pics!

I plan to but I want to see your pics first :D

And, it is mandatory for me to let things age like a fine wine before using them...

Man isn't that the truth. I opened mine, tested it out. Rigged it up and strapped it to my ceiling. Been there ever since. I am trying to justify the cost of a set of Yakima Bars for it... but at 60 bucks I am going to keep looking around.

Let me know if you mount yours up some before I get to.

got it mounted, took it on a camping trip this weekend but it was raining so hard i gave up on camping without setting it up and went home. set it up outside the house. it started raining again so i took it down. now it's in my storage shed for winter

the CTT uses brackets (attached to the base of the tent) that don't necessarily mate with all racks.

if you have load bars, such as the yakimas or thule or similar, you can adjust the location of the bar to match the brackets.

installing them on a rack wtih a floor might be an issue. I think it just depends on how clever you want to be with the mounts.

there are four mount points on the bottom of the CTT. they are designed to slide over yakima style cross bars or similar. the mount points are fixed, so to mount the tent you have to adjust/slide the cross bars along the roof to line up to the mount points.

because of that it is unlikely they will fit on any expedition style rack without mods. you'd have to get really lucky to have the mount points line up with cross bars on your rack that are in the right spot and are the right thickness.

otherwise, to mount on a rack you will either need to start cutting, or buy a set of cross bars and somehow mount them on top of your rack or else fab 4 removable mounts that attach to the rack and figure out how to place them in exactly the right spots.

it's probably easier to remove the expedition rack and mount a set of yakima bars instead.

photos of the CTT brackets and my mounting system in another recent thread of mine...
