Gents,

Planning to replace my fj40's OEM diaphragm-type fuel pump because i feel like like it doesn't do the job anymore. I just replaced the diaphragm few months ago but now, it can hardly deliver fuel to the carb. sometimes, fuel line is dry.

Which one would you recommend? An electric fuel pump or replacement diaphragm-type pump? Pros and cons please. What's the minimum discharge pressure req'd?

Any input will be greatly appreciated.

TIA

GADO

Howdy! I always thought that OEM is best. The problem may be the check valves in the fuel pump instead of the diaphram. Or, you may have blockage in the tank. I'm guessing that you have been changing the fuel filter. John

inkpot,

i open up the pump to clean and check. Looks like the check valves are ok, not stuck-up. Diaphragm is still in good shape coz it's only a few months when i replaced it. I did tried putting some liters of fuel in a clean big plastic bottle, by-passed the filter and put the suction and return line (Hose) directly in the bottle. Put some amount of fuel in the carb to run the engine for few seconds but really, no sign of fuel coming out of the pump. The suction line didn't have any amount of fuel to show that it is pumping.

What do you think?

first bet is to check the fuel filter....sounds like you have done this already next would be the fuel tank out let line to see if there is good fuel flow from the tank; amazing the amount of crap that will accumulate in a 40 year old tank!.HTH

Hi All:

If you need to replace the fuel pump go with a Toyota OE replacement, but be sure to pay attention if there are any shims present on the original pump - these need to be used with the replacement pump.

As others have said, be sure fuel is freely flowing from the fuel tank through the fuel filter to the pump before replacing it.

Good luck!

Alan

fuel pump

when fitting your diaphram always before tightning screws
push lever right down and then tighten screws down snug
otherwise it will not pump as should

I've always replaced with OEM. I figure, if the original was good enough to last 25 years, than it was probably the right design. The best reason I've come across to go with an electric pump is when you're going to be wheeling at extreme angles. Good Luck.

. . . If you need to replace the fuel pump go with a Toyota OE replacement. . . .
Sometimes the neighborhood parts houses stock Kyosan fuel pumps for less than $60. I bought one at NAPA a few years ago for under $50. Kyosan was the OE manufacturer.

Not reading good things about JT Outfitters on this forum. No personal experience, just what I have read.

I've tried aftermarket and it knocked almost 10mph off my top end and the vehicle took longer to get up to highway speeds. I went back to the factory pump and got fast acceleration and top end. This is just my experience. If I could not get a factory mechanical I would be inclined to go to an electric pump.

I'll second the NAPA/Kyosan recommendation. It's an OEM pump for significantly less $$$ than your local Toyota stealership. If you happen to have a AAA membership--ask for the discount at NAPA. No experience with electric pumps on a 40.

I know years ago you could buy a rebuild kit from Toyota for the OEM fuel pump. Thought they did away with that years ago in favor of selling the whole pump.:frown: Did you have an OEM rebuild kit or where did you find your diaphragm. New or used? I would also take the check valves out and really check them out. I little dirt in one check valve could cause your problem. Just make sure you put them back in the right way or it not going to work.

I'm also interested in rebuild parts - my 7/69 has been smelling of fuel and I finally discovered that it's because the fuel pump is dripping! Apparently from the main seam at the diaphragm.

I'm in no great hurry to toss a working pump. My local NAPA doesn't list anything for '69, but they have a mechanical for an F motor for '74 - is that going to be the same pump?

Yes, the 74 pump should work on the '69. The inlet fitting might be different, but it just threads into the pump. Re-use the inlet fitting from the old pump if necessary.

Bah. I called my local NAPA and they told me they had one in stock. Yippee. I drove over and he tried to sell me a Facet electric replacement. When I balked, he dug a bit and found a mechanical pump of some sort ... at a store 400 miles away. I'd have to special order, pay freight, and it might not be what I'm after.

Anyone got a NAPA part number that I can use?

I see that Cool Cruisers has a handful of different pumps:

Fuel Pumps

Are any of these worth putting on my 7/69 F motor?

I have to say that

Fuel Pump Toyota Land Cruiser 58-9/73 FJ40 FJ55 1F gas - JTOutfitters

seems really attractive, the JT Outfitters rep notwithstanding...

Call Kurt at Cruiser Outfitters.
He got me a new Kyosan (OEM) pump pretty quickly at a good price.

I'm not associated with him in any way, but have always been super pleased with his service.
