I have a 1989 FJ 62 and has had no serious issues up until now. I had to replace the fuel relay because it was having issues with a hot start. Then recently I had new drive belts put on. After these two new things were fixed I drove the car and everything was fine. Then the other day I went to drive the car and noticed that the voltage was dropping really bad when the arrow is usually in the middle, but the arrow kept going down almost till the battery was dead while I was driving. Today I purchased a new battery that is slightly different :

Group Size 27 12 Volt, 810 CCA 160RC

but still fits the land cruiser with a higher CCA. I went to drive it and after not even five minutes of driving, the car began to stall over and over again. The original battery is a group 24 with a lower CCA, would that do this? I luckily got home by not stopping and pushing the gas but I’m at a loss. Any suggestions? Here are some photos of the old battery and the new one. I’m aware the wiring looks crazy but I know nothing about electrical if anyone knows anything.

Start by replacing all of those battery cables and lugs on the battery. Looks like the fusible link also needs to be replaced. If that doesn't correct the problem then you need to have your alternator checked.

And make sure you have good connections for the ground wires.

Get the heavy duty cable kit from forum member Mark, it's the best!

I've replaced the negative terminal, but still has the old wiring. The truck idled fine for about 15 minutes but I haven't driven it yet. Does the positive side look correct wiring wise? It looks like its overloaded with wires but i don't know if thats normal for these trucks. Also does anyone know of any forums of instructions on replacing the wiring/how difficult it is?

So I replaced the negative terminal and replaced the wire with two grounds, my issue is now finding the fusible link for the fj62 positive terminal and today realized that one of the three wires is actually snapped off (see photos- also there is a strange green wire that is spliced with a blue connector??). Only one I can find is for the 80s series here - does anyone know if you can use anything else like this one on ebay and splice/diy? I am not familiar with wiring other that a crimp and heat shrink situation. I saw Cruiser colt has a rebuild or the fusible link box's on ebay but is that the only option?

There are several rebuild kits you can buy or replace it altogether.

When all the wiring terminal work is done, test your alternator and be sure it's charging the battery properly.

I second this. I installed mine this weekend. Great quality. They really made a difference.

I got the same kit. Amazing quality.

I ordered the fusible link kit from Cruiser Cult, hopefully it fixes the issue!

The CruiserCult kit worked well for me. There is one connector that you have to use from your old harness, otherwise complete set. I got a second kit completed and keep it in my glovebox.

Okay I put the kit together but now need more help, where does the loose eyelet off the black wire go? There is a box with a mounting stud seen in photos, I assume that’s where this wire goes? I have no idea because my fj62 was completely missing this piece it had snapped off. If this is supposed to go in this box, then what do I do with the box with eyelet?

This is a stock set up with each of the wires going to the positive terminal on the battery. Large white plug with three green wires to positive, single black wire (center in photo) goes to positive. In this photo the black plastic box would cover the exposed stud and nut (gotta tell my son to put some electrical tape on this). Lastly the green female plug, with black male plug with single wire goes to positive on the battery.

Thank you for explaining and photo! My truck doesn’t have any other black cables with eyelet to connect this black cable to. I’ll put a picture of the wires currently, is there a possibility one of the two red wires is meant to connect to this black cable? The only other black wires I see is this one seen in photo.
