Regular Unleaded or Premium Unleaded?

so does mine, but attendants miss that, so I made it apparent in plain sight.
lmao.....thats pretty funny

If they bothered to put a sticker inside the fuel door and they put in the owners manual then thats that. They wouldn't put those stickers there if running lower octane fuel didnt have some LONG term affect on the engine.

Just took my 2000 back from my son after 3 years. I'm sure he pumped the cheapest gas he could find. It runs fine, but I ran 2 tanks of 93 through it just because I felt sorry for the abuse it's taken over the last 3 years.

Gents, just looked at my logs. 5 months of weekend travel between Reno and Jackson Hole.
Total 32467 miles logged.
24224 with 91 yielded an average of 16.1 mpg
The remaining on 89 with an average of 15.9 mpg.
285/75/16 with Autohome RRT on top.

Used Amsoil 0W30... Changed at 15k, filters at 5k...

I didn't read all the threads, just leaving my 2 cents... If your manual says Premium only, run premium. Its only about the price of a Latte to buy Premium over regular, and mid-grade is a waste of 10 cents... spend an extra 10 cents and get premium. Sure, the ECU can adjust for regular, but you wont get the best performance out of your engine that was engineered to run on 91. I get about 1 mpg better in AZ with the speed limit at 75 on the interstate if I run premium. You probably won't notice as much of a difference in fuel if you mainly drive around town. I figured it costs about $2 a tank more after you factor the improved mileage, so why not do it? Also, the more expensive gas gets, Premium becomes a better deal... (it's still only about 20 cents more wether gas is $1, or $4). As far as long-term problems running on 87... Could tell you if there could be, but I don't plan on finding that out with my LC.

First hello,

New member and proud new owner of a 00 LC 80kmiles in excellent shape!

I don't claim to be a automotive engineer, and i have seen this discussion many times before on sport bike forums. With the knowledge I obtained from reading several articles on the subject "not forum posts but actual scientific articles from university sites" I was under the impression the lower the compression the lower the octane required, the higher the compression the higher the octane required? The 00 LC has a 9.8-1 compression ratio . Every vehicle "including bikes" I've every owned with a compression ratio of 10-1 or lower has always called for 87 octane. My 04 Sequioa that has the same exact engine as my LC calls for 87 octane in the manual. Don't know why toyota would say use 91 in the LC and 87 in the Sequoia?

I "chipped" the ECU in my BMW and the software is setup for "premium" fuel specifically, but as far as I know software can't modify the compression... by altering fuel enrichment, cam timing and ignition timing specifically for use with premium gasoline... so apparently engine compression is one factor that may affect what fuel you need to use, but not the only factor.

I'd imagine that the ECU in the LC has some ability to adjust to what fuel you're running and whatever is recommended is the sweet spot that it is programmed for... especially considering there are at least a dozen different seasonal and regional blends of gasoline in use across the U.S. at any given time (as many as 45 when you factor in the three grades)... there are a lot of things going on that may make one station's 87-octane differ from another station's 87-octane fuel (e.g. blend, additives, refining variances, location, etc.).

Point being, literally, YMMV, depending upon a multitude of factors and won't necessarily be the same for everyone.

100% Gasoline and Octane Booster

Ok, I found a station that still sells 100% gas, although it is 87 grade:rimshot.

I really want to take all my vehicles and small engines off the ethanol.
My 99 is one of the models that requires premium.

Do you think I can buy the 87 grade gas and add octane booster such as the STP http://www.stp.com/products/fuel-additives/octane-booster/
and still come out close to a premium grade.

Have always used premium in all my vehicles including the LX :) and have never missed a beat

Over 276,000 miles and 16 years I have only filled up 43 times with anything but regular 87 octane, almost always with Ethanol. My 98 LC is still running like new.

I'd take straight 87 over E10 92 any day. What I wouldn't take, however, is straight 87 without additives. If that's a not a top-tier station then you'll want to add techron additive.

That won't do you any good when you're driving from TX to AL for a tank of gas!

Seriously, 87 without ethanol is fine. You have a slightly retarded ignition timing under load but that's it. Under normal driving its zero difference for 87 and 93 in our trucks.

I run mid grade. There is no difference between the V8 in the LX, vs LC or even 4runner. Premium is recommended. Now in my BMW it is required and I can tell the difference when I run mid grade

HA! We moved to Guntersville this summer. (profile location updated now)

I'm in Huntsville. Drop me a pm. I'd love to wheel with another built 100.

Tech: I run mid grade when the station has or premium at SAMs club when I fill up there. Don't really notice a big difference in the seat of the pants meter.

I use 87 in my truck. I used premium for a while, but the increase in MPGs did not offset the increase in fuel price. Does anyone have any fact based evidence that indicates long term engine damage, to a 4.7l Toyota endings, from using 87 octane fuel? I believe ever increasing amounts of ethanol can cause certain types of wear, but I don't believe using 87 octane does anything but prevent slightly higher efficiency.

Wow this thread is almost a decade old. I wonder what premium costed back then where OP was.

For those teetering between fuel grades, just remember, fuel is always getting more expensive. By using the crappy stuff you are only a couple weeks behind the power curve. Today's 87 costs the same as yesterday's 93. Just sayin'

What year did TEQ go from premium to unleaded in the owners manual?

Paging Beno- - what part#s are different?
