so the day has come….ive handed over the keys. my 17 year old has been working beside me since we bought this with the intent it would be his to drive. he’s been driving it off and on this past year when it had a roof but always on back roads and light traffic. today he gets to start to figure it out in traffic. he’s a great driver and properly cautious so he’ll be fine.

i’ll have to drive it now and again to get my 40 fix while mine is still in pieces. i looked at it today at least

well the cheap foil backed foam under the headliner didn’t stick and the headliner fell off. oh well. it was worth the try. i’ll have to take the off again later and redo it.

on a different note im having troubles with signal lights. seems like the flasher doesn’t want to work. i can tap the flasher and it’ll signal for a few blinks and then stop. are these flashers specific to my fj40 or will any old flasher work?

well the hairyness continues. i seem to only be getting 9.5 V to the flasher. i’m going to replace it anyway but i think i have some wiring resistance issues to chase . i hate wires

Check the inside of the contacts on the bulb holder, the center button and the holder itself plus the bulb and the grounds. Pencil eraser is good for cleaning the contact buttons. Q-tip with dielectric grease will help with corrosion.

still searching for the electrical issues. no joy. i did find that a PO used some trailer wire plugged up under the dash so we’re going to try and make that a better job.

with winter coming though i need to get door seals done. i did some of them a while ago but didnt prep it right and didnt glue it right so they didnt stick. live and learn. the adhesive is supposed to be used like a contact cement and not just a glue. i guess i should have read the instructions. i’m also trying to clean all them oxidation off the paint this time too to get a better bond. so here’s door number one getting cleaned up again

i’m making the assumption it’s good as i have city racer seals and 3m weatherstrip adhesive. but i’ll double check.

edit. i have 3m waiting for my chevelle. i have permatex 81850. it’s apparently not a good adhesive for city racer seals!! crap. glad i haven’t put more on than just the rear lower hatch!!

thanks for this!! my chevelle weather strip is also precision brand made from epdm rubber. my 3m super black won’t work on it either. you’ve just saved me a lot of headache.

According to 3M's website it is formulated for EPDM seals. Is it possible that the seals have mold release agent still on them?

yeah i’ve cleaned the seals well. my 3m is the 08008 stuff city racer says specifically not to use. it’s the super black. my son is grabbing a tube of the 3m black 4799 right now

i always learn something new on these projects!!
