Hi guys,

Long story short, my first car was this ‘89 FJ62. Drove it every day until I joined the Navy 4 years later. 10 years later, I finally got it down here in Utah from my parents place in Washington State. It’s been sitting for those 10 years. Has 267,300 miles. Starting my restoration of it now from my garage, it’s my first project car ever and started by doing an oil change and dropping the fuel tank. Going to follow Tactical’s restoration process of his 62 that he got after sitting for 20 years. First real question, the fuel pump bracket seems excessively priced at ~$400 I’m wondering if mine is salvaged enough to work. See the pictures.

As long as the pitting isn't too deep to where it might break and there aren't any holes in the tubes it should be ok. If you haven't already, run some stiff copper wire through the tubes to break out any rust buildup, followed by a rinse and air blasting.

These are the best stories!

Has the tank recall been done? The inside of that tank looks grimey from the one pic
Tank recall has not been done. I spoke with my local dealer and according to them (they had to reach out to big Toyota regarding part availability) the tanks are no longer being manufactured and the only thing they offered to do was buy the vehicle back.

Tank is very rusty inside, but no noticeable holes or leaking present. Going to do the acid wash and completely dry the inside and then use POR15 tank repair to re-line it.

Those tank reline kits are questionable at best.

You'll never get a tank that large clean and smooth enough (interior baffling, corners, etc) for the POR15 to stick to a clean surface.

There are plenty of farily recent stories about tank recalls that were done with constant dealer calls and visits, including reaching out to Corporate.

Either get a long range tank, a clean used one from a part out, or attack Toyota until they agree. Social media is your friend.

Or just give @cruisermatt a call... the king of new 62 tanks

Had a follow up call with the dealership management today. They confirmed that there are no tanks left in the country and that Toyota will not be making any more. Unfortunate for those of us with open recalls.

Call @cruisermatt Or look on his online store... here

OEM FJ62 tanks have been unavailable for a long time. Your dealer is not lying to you. The FJ60 tank appears to be available still, but that doesn't help you.

Take your tank down to your local rad shop and ask them to hot tank it. It will come back in shiny bare metal. You may then wish to pressure test it to make sure the seams don't leak and that there aren't any rust pinholes.

Nice 62! My first car was my 62 as well which I still have.

We have new 62 tanks here in Florida as well as the sending units which we reproduced out of stainless steel. I hope the comment about $400 being excessive wasn;t in regards to my product.. which were almost impossible to find for under $500 for rusty ones.

I understand why they are $400. Excessive might be the wrong word there. I actually purchased the hose kits from you recently and appreciate all of your products. I’m a bit on a budget right now so the tank is out of my price range currently, so trying to exhaust the budget options first.

Funny, I have a good used FJ62 tank that I had listed at $100 on marketplace. It was there for months and not one person messaged me about it. I still have it but unfortunately I cannot ship it to the USA at this time because getting anything across the border is such a hassle these days. But if you happen to be taking a swing through southern Alberta (I'm just north of Sweetgrass, MT) I'd be happy to sell it to you.

Don't do the reseal from por I used it on a customer's 60 I ls swapped and used a 62 tank that was in very poor shape the sealer ended up falling of and blocking the fuel pump only at certain levels ended up getting another used tank solved the problem.
