I need to reseal and swap birfs side and need some local birf expert to give guidance in case I get stuck. Please email me direct if you're near 405 and Euclid to give supervision if needed.

Read couple write ups, got air tools, buying kits from Cruiserdan so I'll have everything I need. Done lots of engine stuff but not familiar with the birfs that why I want to do both in less than 6 hrs without hiccups.TIA.

It sucks as you can see in my thread in the stickies above. I will probably never do it again but then again I hate vehicle maintenance, I enjoy the modification projects. Good luck to you, see if you can borrow the DVD from someone to watch first.

Yip, read your stickies and couple other writeups on here along with watching a bunch of YouTubes on "Toyota birfields" gave me the confidence now. Thanks for the stickies and chiming in.

Found this trick to split the axle shaft : http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=S0_jL83jMH8&feature=watch-vrec and reinserting it: http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=rfaRtNCtPyw

Looks like I m ready to do this with 1 eye close. I'll have 1 gal gasoline in bucket to wash, bunch of plastic bags to bag the grease and lots of appear towel and latex glove to keep everything clean. This job is on scale of 9 for messy and 5 for difficulty. Thanks.

My 2 cents would be to not skimp on grease. I used Valvoline Durablend the first time for everything as that's what I had. Ended up going back into the front end about a month later and pulling all the bearings, cleaning them, and repacking them with Mobil 1 Synthetic (red stuff). Just some food for thought.

If I was closer I'd offer to help, I've rebuilt quite a few Toyota front and rear axles. The most time consuming part is all the cleaning. I use diesel because it doesn't evaporate away while I'm working.

Cheers.

You mean diesel instead of gas? I thought it stinks?

I am planning to use moly grease on birfs and bearing since it seems to be popular. Could I use synthetic grease on both? TIA.

Peter

I need to do this on my left side also. Maybe we could get together and team up on this. I haven't done this either. But I have had it apart when the axel nut and star washer died and backed themselves off. I did repack the bearings at that time though, but my seals have now gone and it all needs to be cleaned and resealed and repacked.
I'm in Cypress, Lincoln and Valley View. I can't this weekend but maybe next?

Hey fellas. I have never done this on my truck but i would be interested in giving a hand and learning at bit. Depending on day and time.
I'm in San Juan Cap.

Thanks for the on demand tech support. Another local member offered onsite support so I am sure we'll get instant answer. I'll let you know when we're doing the job as I'll coordinate with BigDave and OG 91 LC. Thanks.

Peter

I've done a couple of birfs and normally work weekends but would be open helping through email or phone if you get stuck. But like Noah said just dive in and do it; follow the FSM/threads & you shouldn't have any issues. I may still have a Word file I created from one of the threads to help me with the job. PM me if you're interested.

Oh, and stay away from gas as a solvent. It works great but evaporates too quickly and bad things can happen.... Diesel's safer. I used mineral spirits and numerous can of brake cleaner plus lots & lots of paper towels.

I just did a birf job on my 94. I've spent about 4-5 days on it but I'm a bit obsessive when it comes to cleaning parts. That and my driver's birf and spindle were trashed from the previous owner not attaching the hub to the spindle. Thanks to TJ for the parts! All in all it was easy, just very tedious and very very messy.

Finally done my birfs 2 weeks ago. Total time was @ 16 hrs at leisure pace. I used the zip tie on the snapring where the birf goes into the shaft instead of worm clamp- that was the only thing different, other than that the write up was perfect and detailed. Thanks to all the brave soul who ventures before me.

Congrats! Sounds like you had a better go at it then me.
