My 97 had the parking brakes gutted. Does anyone know where I can get instructions for a rebuild? I hear most people rip them out and just go without because of the poor design and when the corrode they basically implode. What are your suggestions?

1. Buy correct year FSM.
2. Buy oem park brake shoes.
3. Install parking brake shoes per FSM.
4. Stop listening to most of the the rhetoric you hear from every wannabe engineer.

If you need parts, go to the "parting out" section and buy all the components.

If you USE it regularly, it doesn't have a problem. I also packed the back part of mine with white lithium grease to prevent it from taking on water and it has worked great. It took a while and some creativity to get it freed up and MAKE it usable.

You can buy complete kits of all the springs and clips for rebuilding the rear park / hand brake.

Correct adjustment starting at the brake drum is critical to effective performance of the completed job.

Do not attempt to adjust from the inside of the car first. The adjuster at the internal point is just to take up cable stretch.

not a big big deal to replace the parking brakes and all related hardware. its not really a poor design, most people don't use the parking brake so the bell cranks seize up and then the parking brake dosnt work or wil get stuck on when they use it for the first in a few years. when you reassemble use anti seize

I used to guess how to adjust it but then I followed the FSM to the letter and it came out perfect. FSM pages attached

Thank you very much. That is exactly what I am looking for. Everything was gone so this will help me find what I need. I have the rebuild kit but it is missing some of the major components. Thanks again.

Just finished replacing all the parts in mine. @beno was my parts resource and the FSM was there to explain how to back off 8 clicks after full engagement was the ticket. Never done brakes before yet with proper instruction it worked like a charm. Dont forget to seat the shoes after install.

I would definitely get it replaced. I ran without for two years, then last year I spent almost $300 getting mine going again. Saved my ass bigtime out in Colorado.

Good thread. I am glad I found that FSM PDF, @Stevesnj , thanks for posting that here.

Where can I find the rebuild kits? Mine is working, but making some rattling noises, so I'm going to rebuild it and be done with it for a few years. Does anyone have a full list of part numbers I can use?

I think this might be what you’re looking for:

Wit's End carries the kits
