You see how nicely it fits into the groove for the seal. The square nut stuck out just enough toward the back of the bellhousing that I could wack it with a hammer.
Must have changed with the 2F, or earlier. It's a smaller than usual plug, I THINK it was 27mm, off to the left at about 10 oc'clock in relation to the crankshaft. That one closes the back of the oil gallery on 2F's Didn't know that it's not there on F engines but it makes sense considering their top oiling of the valve gear through a tube. The bellhousing removal reveals it. You have the bellhousing out, right.....
I was kidding you about the grungy bandaid. Not to worry
No, they both have them in the same location....as you stated, you need to have the flywheel housing removed in order to check/replace either the oil galley plug or the cam plug....both which I have seen leak, and a rear main seal blamed for the mess...
Related question-I had my bellhousing off when I swapped trannies in my FJ60, specifically to look at that plug. Mine was intact and not leaking. Should I have replaced it with the spare I had on hand from Cruiserdan? I ask because I plan to pull the tranny later this summer and could easily take down the bell housing again.
Also, When I replaced the main seal, I got it 90% in by hand and a few taps sent it home the rest of the way and no leaks!!
bsevans, the OD might have been a little small, as you say. That was the best I could do in our little town hardware. Perhaps I should have flipped the old seal, put it on the rim of the cleanout and used it to tap the seal.
Yep, the galley and camshaft plugs were out of sight. There's a 50 mm plug at 12 oclock to the rear seal on my F135, unlike Degnol's F155 1/2.
That would be the water jacket plug at the back of the head, no?
I'd forgotten that the bellhousing flange covered the plugs that can leak oil as you see in Ed's picture, but those at 10 and 2 o'clock are the ones I'm talking about.
Dave, I've probably got you all worried now, huh? I didn't set out to do that but hadn't noticed when I looked at your pictures that you haven't removed the clutch housing.
Is everything pretty clean inside your bellhousing? If so, and you can see pretty well that it was the rear crank seal that did your leak then I'd say that you've got a good chance of not having a leak at one of the plugs. Who can guarantee it? Nobody, but I wish I could.
Toyota here had to order me the larger of the two, the cam plug, and got it wrong twice even after we both put fingers on it in their michrofiche. It was such a pain that I wished I'd never taken the original out as it never leaked in the first place. The smaller did leak though

There was oil all over the bellhousing inners, but amazingly, not a bit on the cluch disk. I didn't have much of a leak, and what there was I suspect was more from the rear oil pan gasket than the engine seal. I just did it because I was in there. When I got the truck it spewed oil from the loose oil filler tube as well.
I agree that one should not replace those galley plugs unless forced.

I owe you an apology. I realize now that I added the PVC extension because it increased my external OD to approximately 4.75", which as you can see, matches the OD of the seal. The cleanout has an approximate 4.5" OD. What you have is the same as my cleanout and I forgot to tell you about the PVC extension, which may have made the difference in getting the seal in without dropping the cap.

Exactly what I plan on doing when I replace the oil pan gasket, rear seal, side cover seal. Thanks for all the links in this thread folks! Sure will make this task easier.
Yeah, ole dummy here, thought my rear seal was leaking. Pulled tranny and transfer and replaced what looked like a very good rear engine seal. Put it all back together and still had the leak. This is when I found out about the other 2 plugs, each of which may leak. One of mine is leaking, but I am going to put up with the leak for a while. Not about to pull tranny and transfer again right now. That was a hell of a one man job. Not leaking bad, but if anybody out there has any other ideas of a fix without pulling the tranny and transfer please share it with me. I am just a rookis and learning. Love the IH8Mud site. Full of good information. Thanks to all that have helped me so far..
