Rear end locked up while driving

Most people won't respond within an hour of something being posted in this section of the forum. To me it sounds like it's either your transfer case or transmission if it moves with it in netural. I'd double check by jacking up the rear of the truck and making sure both wheels spin freely with the driveshaft off. When turning one wheel the other should turn in the other direction unless it has a locker to rule out the differential being bad.

Drop the fluids on the differential, tranny and transfer case. If you had some type of failure or other damage caused by the sudden stoppage of the drivetrain, you’ll have the carnage come out along with the oil;)

I had the loud bang on my ’87, and initial funkiness with the rear end, then it was fine with some grinding. Thankfully I was just missing a few toofuses on my ring and pinion. Perfect opportunity to add a locker:grinpimp:

But, if it locks back up when you take it back out of neutral, then as said, you likely have a transmission/transfer case problem.

Any ideas / Suggestions pappy?
Ya, you just ruled out your rear diff if the rear axle rolls with the TC in neutral. That is not to say it might have been damaged with the sudden stop

Since the engine turns over with the clutch in, then the issue is between the clutch and the transfer case. Transmission. Good luck.

I like the idea about draining the oil.

ok thank you i really appreciate the advice it is much needed. I will try everything i can from all the posts and replies and try to narrow it down.
