Can we please get some pics from the side and from the ground? Tks.

Lower top tubes would be good, too.

I'd be interested too. I have Flak's bumper mounted tire carrier that might co-exist nicely with the wing protection. One day I may go the whole 4x4 labs route, but I've got to dust off my high-school level welding skills and start over again first. Put me in the highly interested column!

Love my Slee with wings.
I needed to swap out my 863s for 868s once I had three fuel/water cans and a second spare on an OEM steel wheel underneath it.
The extra weight is perfect with the 868s, I couldn't be happier
The pic installed is pre-868s.

Love those Hefty "Wings" but totally agree that the pricing was way out of line. Bumpers can be made cheaper, it's sad no companies will offer them for a more respectable price. This is a great idea that could be made cheap. Plenty of small companies in the XJ world (which isnt huge by any means in the way of people willing to spend 1k on bumpers, let alone 2k) sell WICKED bumpers for 800-900 and nice ones for 4-500... there is a shop in Mt. Airy, NC that will build nice winch bumpers for around $250 for Xj's, and he does a lot of custom stuff on Land Rovers, etc... i bet he would do an LC for around 4-500, winch capable.....

Lc's are approaching 4 and 5k often these days... there will be a growing market for lower priced, but still quality parts if someone jumps on the wagon!

Just for reference

JcrOffroad, Inc. i have their sliders on my jeep... yes there bumpers get semi expensive for jeeps, but they even offer lifetime warranties... no need for the crazy 2 and 3000 dollar bumpers

How many XJs produced vs. how many North American 80 series? Potential market may have some bearing on the price perhaps?

I like!!!! count me in I love my rear marker lights!!

Bump ;p

Dear MT,

Please make us some super-sexy and semi-affordable bumper wings in plate or tube flavor.

Signed,
Mudders who don't want full bumpers and can't fab their own. :p

And all your fab experience makes that a fact, huh?
Seriously though, I know there's demand for these as Hefty still gets about an email a week asking for them. Until people stop comparing complete wings to a DIY bumper kit though, the price will always be an issue.

Also, Fabricators make money by producing 10-15 bumpers at a time, not one a week or less. Retooling is a huge factor. It's extremely difficult to switch from one type of bumper to the next efficiently. If a fabricator out there is willing to invest and has the time available, this product will happen. But I can't see this ever happening at $400.

Compare it to sliders- you have a little less material, but substantially more work in wings and companies are still charging $400-1000 for sliders. The jigs for welding up sliders are going to be less complex and easier to build and yet there's your price range.

If you want cheap parts, learn to DIY or buy a Jeep.

:cheers::steer:

I definitely am not an expert fabricator, i just know certain things can be made cheaper.. But I totally agree, people need to make their Money.

I do have a Jeep, and I do as much DIY i can.... But FYI, the jeep market is just the same... some charge $1000 for winch bumpers.... others charge $300... the $300 ones are usually just as stout... ot stouter... The LC world is full of overpriced products.... Luckily enough for the manufacturers, people will pay for them

People get awfully offended around here about someone making a comment on prices... people post up goods for responses... It was a response..

I called Metal Tech around a year ago when I first saw that orange truck's wings. They said something around the lines of they are working on developing them and maybe in 3-4 weeks, well a year later nothing so don't expect those to ever be a reality.

I also feel that fabricated parts are way overpriced for these trucks. It pisses me off to no end that I can buy thirty different rear bumpers for a JK when there are 5 for our truck and they all look about the same and cost big bucks. Would I own a JK if I could, absolutely, but I am not going to spend $35k on a truck so I can choose between those thirty bumpers.

This is reality with these trucks:

also this kind of bumper side protection doesnt look that complicated to make. imagine cutting the bumper ends off this and fixing to the ends of 80 cross member?

4x4 labs kit..

What is there not to like??

you would need to ask the local vehicle examiners here, every mod here needs homologating to pass the yearly "has it been modified" examination, and on the rear, the OEM must stay. :frown:

hence I need either something custom that will (preferably) go under the rear plastic ends, or replace them, bolt on style, and that I can just swap in and out for the test every year.

otherwise, I would agree with you, what is not to like..
