re-tapping threads after paint

I just painted my inner fenders. My first time, should I tap the threads or will the bolts knock the paint off as I thread them?

I retapped all my bolt hole in my frame and body after painting. It made reassembly alot nicer. The bolts can clean the holes but they can bind and break too.

Tap them to clean them. If you did primer, base and clear then you need to tap them. I had to or the bolts would bind up before tightening the parts.

try starting the bolts, maybe a few turns. Remove, repeat this several times, and you should have a clean area to put your bolts in. Typically this will work with patients. Just take it slow, don't try that extra turn when you think you can make it.

I usuall use an old bolt and cut a groove in it with a hack saw or dremel. Makes a good thread cleaner. And it's cheap.

Put old bolts in before you paint.

If yu have already painted and have the taps I say use 'em.
