Ok so I have an 82' with a tub that is completely shot so obviously I'm not wanting to spend a lot of money on a paintjob when I plan on ripping the entire tub off within a year or two. I thought I'd go the Macco route but they wanted 500 just to paint the outside and that was the cruddy paintjob. I was wondering what kind of an experience people have had with a cheap rattle can job. How time consuming is it and what kind of results did you get? Keep in mind I'm not expecting or looking for anything that great (mine is currently about 5 colors in different areas) just something to get me by, look decent, and cover up the metal so the parts I'm saving don't get any worse. Some pictures would be great as well. Thanks a lot.

I have been doing rattle can jobs on different body parts since I plan a full paint job in the future and just want to stave off rust and not drive grandma's quilt around. Here's a recent pic. See if you can see the rattle can vs. the 5 year old PO respray.

BTW I order PPG colormatched rattle cans from www.ppg.com . If you are doing the whole thing, I'm sure you can go with Krylon or whatever and save $$$.

your bezel is backwards, and did you just paint right over the chrome hood ornomant?

this whole truck was painted from a rattle can, wheels and all.
paint from a farm and tractor place. and the yes the doors are a different "shade", they were painted quite a few years after the rest of the truck.
there was very little prep work done to the truck, no sanding or anything just washed it off and dryed it.
originally smurf blue.
it was painted back in the early-mid90's.

I rattle-canned mine a couple months ago. Couldn't stand the all-white, didn't want to pay for a pro.

DO IT! I painted mine in hammerite smooth, you can get it at the local Home Depot. I would reccomend doing several coats and knocking down the paint after awhile when it is completely dry with some light sandpaper, then do a rattle can clearcoat, this will help greatly in UV protection and basic protection. Here's a pic, all I did for prep was some sanding of the old paint and making sure any chips were feathered down so the top paint would adhere well. Also, if you are going to do a bunch of coats and the whole truck, you may want to think of using a cheap gun and compressor as I spent a lot of money on cans as I ended up putting on like 6 coats.

I rattle can small parts of my 45lwb when the mood strikes me. Haven't done the whole truck yet, but most of it.

How's it look?

Good enough for the cover of TT!:grinpimp:

Spray can paint is fine for most applications. The chemicals do not burn as hot, so you most likely cannot spray krylon red down and expect a PPG clearcoat over the top of it (it will probably melt your color coat). I would avoid white at it WILL yellow.

Also, the paint dulls alot faster than pro grade paint in the sun. So if you take your door or hardtop off and store them inside, the color probably will be lighter on your rig when you reinstall.

Hope this helps.

...and oh yea do it when its real cool .it will help with the start and stops.(the lines)

This is true: I did mine early in the morning outdoors, but the shady side finish is a bit nicer than the sunny side. Oh, well.

I used the Krylon camo paint from Wal-Mart.

If you scratch it, you can just sand a little and paint over. The flat paint blends in great. This way you can always touch it up.

Krylon orange on mine also.
