Okay, this post is for no other purpose than being narcissistic and self indulging.
This post represents my 3,000th post on IH8MUD!! Especially considering that most of my posts are non-sensible dribble, just taking up space on the forum... :p

Today, while the wife was at the office working hard, I decided to do a little solo trip to the top of our local mountain, Santiago Peak (commonly referred to Saddleback Mountain by the locals).

Again, while the wife is at work, the mouse will play!
Yesterday I went into some other local mountains (Idylwilde, Riverside County) to look for some dispersed campsite locations off the beaten trail.
Still had a wee bit of snow along the trails. Below are some gratuitous pictures of my adventure.

The first picture is to hopefully end all discussion about how large a diameter tire will work on our GX's without turing your rig into a poser or mall cruiser AND without fender trimming or massive lifts (body or suspension). Note that my tire size is the LT285/75R17 BFG M/T TA KM2 (which I'm sure you all have read in various other posts of mine). They measure out new as 33.9 outside diameter. My tires have over 45,000 miles on them in these photos.

That photo above shows the tire almost completely stuffed into the wheel well with about 1/2" left before rubbing the rear bumper and maybe an inch in the front from the fender.

This time I took the wife!! We overlanded the Mojave trail with our off road club this weekend (3 days, 2 nights).
Below are a couple of highlights of the trip.

So a couple of days ago on the way to work I was T-Boned. Have to attest to the how well the rock sliders on my rig saved me from a lot more damage. (it really wasn't a lift threatening accident)
You can see below the Camery didn't fare so well. I was able to continue driving my vehicle, but the other guy... He'll be in a rental car for a while. Even if I didn't have the sliders, it was not a bad accident, but I'm quite sure that there would have been far more damage to my GX if it didn't have a lifted suspension and rock sliders.
Albeit, the accident wasn't life threatening, in fact the Camery's air bags didn't even go off! Thinking about it, neither did my side impact bags! Maybe because I was the only person inside and the hit was on the passenger side. :meh:
Since the passenger side slider is ever so slightly bent up and my insurance is paying for it, now I'm looking at some new and different sliders.
About the only repairs is replacing the passenger rear door, some molding on the front door and sliders.
NOTE: The MetalTech sliders have worked great while off roading and in this accident! My ONLY complaint is they aren't wide enough to get a good purchase for footing, even with the kick-out. I'd like them wider otherwise I'd buy them again.
So if you like a more tucked in and narrower slider, I highly recommend these MetalTech sliders.

Sucks you got hit! Those sliders tore that Camry UP!
 
I've got RSG GX460 angled sliders with kickout and top plate grip. If I had to do it over again, I'd probably save the $50 and go without the grip option. For the angled version at least, I find that my foot doesn't come into contact too much with the grip teeth when I'm getting in/out.

I didn't think about the fact that with the sliders being angled that one probably wouldn't be in contact with the grip/traction features!
My reason for not wanting that feature was because of being at the beach and barefoot most of the time, those traction claws would tear up our feet!
I just use black skateboard grip tape and that's all the traction needed. I've been in snow, rain, mud, with all kinds of shoes/boots and barefoot and have never slipped! And so far it's lasted 3+ years since I put it on.

Did some overlanding and camping in our local mountains the other weekend. It took a while to get my wife to upload her photos, so I'm just getting to it.
We went to a old western town called Pioneer town that an old western actor built to use in western movies, which they did!

This is for anyone who's purchased from RSG Metalworks:
How is customer service?
I've ordered a pair of sliders to replace the ones I currently have and have not heard anything about receiving the order or anything. This was over a week ago.
I tried calling them today, twice, and no answer. In fact, the phone number given by the voice mail was not the number I dialed!
Any help on who would be the person to speak with or how this shop rolls?

I ordered from RSG sometime back in March. They were pretty quick to follow up with what looked to be a mostly boilerplate confirmation email that stated an estimated time to ship. I recall the estimate was pretty accurate and the sliders arrived well-packed. I didn't have any issues so I never had a need to call or otherwise email.
