I thought about the white. I just couldn't imagine how it could ever be kept clean, even if I only wore silk booties on it. Happy to do it in white though. After I'm satisfied with the prototypes, I will definitely take some orders.

Is that the mat in white or the silk booties?

Another data point. My Canadian spec 1966 FJ40 has the same, black pyramids covering the back floor. It has a few other items (like door cards) that US rigs of the era didn't seem to get. I'm pretty sure the remnants on the running boards are white.

I think a mat for the cargo area is brilliant, it should cover the inner fenders too. Not sure how raw paint in a cargo area was ever a good idea.
I'll need more material to make a prototype, I'll see how round one goes with the floor mats and take it from there.

😂 like anyone at the “concourse inspection” would know what’s suppose to be there. Have you watched any of the recent high end auctions? They barely know what the actual model is, and a 45LV would blow their mind.

Just got home to discover a 110lb box of rubber in my driveway. Really happy with the product, it was difficult to cut even with a nice pair of Fiskar scissors, appears to be slightly thicker than the factory mat too. There is an issue for the purist though, the new stuff isn't oriented in a square grid, it's at 45 degrees to the long dimension of the fabric. Meaning the grid won't be square to the car like the original mat was, it will be diagonal.

I wonder if that “orientation” difference is really just wear on the original so the tops of the pyramids are flattened more?

👌 got it.

Isn’t it really just a matter of rotating the material 45 degrees when it’s cut? A diamond shape is just a square, rotated right? But of course that would mean a lot more wasted material unfortunately.

I think it may be possible to rotate the material in the future as this material is supposed to be available in a 4ft width. Unfortunately for now, all the supplier had left was 3ft wide material and if you cut it diagonal, there isn't enough length to make some of the pieces. And yes, it would definitely waste more material to cut out diagonal pieces once the 4ft material could be sourced. Currently I just bought the last 45ft length of 3ft black that the supplier had and their replacement stock is backordered. FWIW, they have lots of white in stock.

So I just found this LV firewall pad that I had no idea that I had.
if anyone needs a good pattern let me know.

Installation of that firewall pad looks pretty involved, might have to pull a few firewall mounted items to install it properly. I always assumed that pad was a dealer add-on as the snaps are just driven right through the metal with self-tapping screws. I sure have a hard time seeing that type of monkey-business happening at the factory after all the work they put into those cars.

Can you send a close up photo of both sides of this? Curious what the material looks like. I assume something somewhat insulative?

@Mtntopper certainly no urgency but curious if you were ever able to find the material in a diamond pattern (vs square) and if your shop has churned out any prototypes or anything? I’ve had lots of false starts myself with projects like this for early cruisers, thinking I’d found someone to make something only to have the project die for one reason or another. Hope you have better luck than I have had!

This one looks all very original to me. It is vinyl type material on the front with a foam backing.

This pad would have to be installed before the heater box and some other components so I am assuming that it would have to have been installed at Gifu. Like your's the snaps on the firewall side are screwed directly into the sheet metal.

I have a local custom upholsterer who may be able to make me a copy, TBD.
