Wow, sad to hear about that. It did "look" great in the few earlier pictures. A prime example of where research and knowledge is needed on anything that you are going to be laying your cash down for. Was this bought over the net, sight unseen with no inspection?
I guess more money will be thrown at it now hey?! :hhmm:
 
I'm struggling to understand this thread.

I've even had to read right through all 7 pages to check that it isn't two entirely different vehicles being discussed.

Camera's can lie ... but only to a certain extent. And a lot of the faults listed by Wayne are minor and easily fixed.

Still a great truck in my view.

And I find that making repairs can be just as much fun as "wheeling" (if not MORE fun)!

to me, it is a blatant coverup of flaws.

here is the issue, the truck was advertised as a mint condition, numbers matching vehicle. numbers matching it was. mint - far from it.

Lostmarbles,
rebuilding an engine,
rebuilding an injection pump,
rebuilding or finding a H41 is not cheap or easy in North America.

add to this all the other "small" drivetrain and elect issues and you still need doors, paint, frame repaired.

as a "mint" truck the buyer got a steel tub and fenders for $30K.

i posted the list as a warning to those that shop for a Cruiser online, if you do not know the person intimately, if you don't know Cruisers and what to look for or if you can not look at the truck in person then get it inspected before you buy.

$30K for this truck IF it was mint would have been a steal.
$30K for this truck in the condition he bought it was about $15K to $20K TOO MUCH.

The seller knew the flaws and sold it misleadingly (and i use this word lightly).
The shop teacher should be fired since he knew the flaws as well and passed this knowledge onto his shop class.

This is one of two land cruisers i have seen in person from South America and unless i can see the trucks in person (or have it inspected by someone like Tapage) there is NO WAY i would ever even shop for a truck down there.
 
What happened then?

Like i often say, it is not like you can walk away and get a other the same day... I'd rather do mechanical repair then run after rust...

Probably nobody on this board have the money to buy a mint completely original unmolested BJ43, if such a truck exist...

a very good score for $30K.

needs a little work but nothing really "oh my god".

i rebuilt the engine
he had a guy in Sudbury rebuild (or in the process) of rebuilding the pump.
the truck wouldn't hold 80 k/h even on the shortest of bumps. compression was extremely low.
ever tried finding parts for the old B engine? one that was hobbled together in SA? one sold in SA? parts are very unique to this unit.

not an easy or quick rebuild.
 
Why didn't you look for a 3B? For 2-3k you could probably find a complete 3B h55 setup here in canada. Heck for 3k you could find a totally rust bucket 60. Maybe he was in a hurry to get this done. It has already been molested, so a 3B could only be a good upgrade.

i made that suggestion but the owner wanted to keep it numbers matching, i could understand his desire.

the 3B and H55F would have been a good upgrade but there is deffinately something to keeping a rare truck original.
 
well he owns a 97 4 runner and a porche, i love when rich people get ripped off. how do you think they got rich???

Makes me feel better about my rusty old CDM spec I have way to much money tied up in. Still Does 110 kmph no problem!!!

I would have felt sorry for him if he didn't own a porshe....

I have a 1981 H41 available if he wants a drop in unit. It may need a rebuild on the transfer but I haven't investigated it too deeply.

Wow, That sucks about the rig.. the pictures looked so nice! Rich/Not, doesn't matter. Getting soured on a rig because some a****** plays on our hopes (and addiction!) is pretty crappy. Sorry about that man. You are in good hands and can make sweet ass lemonade from the lemons...

I would agree with crushers. This LC is to nice!!. Just get a beater and use it as a trail rig. Use this as your daily driver and show and shine vehicle :)

What's the overall state of the truck now? It sounds like the owner is/was trying to save it (engine rebuild, pump rebuild, etc.).

He hasn't logged in since May 2010. Im sure this experinece has soured him to cruisers, somewhat.

I'd forgotten about this thread/truck until I stumbled upon it again today by accident. I was following it pretty closely a year ago when it was first unfolding. It was of special interest to me as I had just bought my first cruiser about 10 months earlier (January 2009).

My situation was similar but I had a much better outcome. I found my truck on eBay. Bought it sight unseen except for a dozen or so pics and one phone conversation with the seller. He imported the truck from Australia in 8/2008. I sent the guy a check and had the vehicle delivered via shipper. The only problem I had with the vehicle when it landed in my front yard was loose battery terminals. Oh, and one bad glow plug. In 2009 I did the brakes, knuckles and tires . In 2010 (I park it in winter) the ONLY work I did was replace the belts.

Next year I need to have the interior reupholstered. There's a 2x6 hole in the passenger floor that needs patching. And I've got a H55F waiting to go in. A turbo would be nice but only after the 5-speed.
 
what condition is the truck in now? not sure.
the owner stopped conversing with me once i asked for payment for a pair of manuals i supplied in trust. i asked for payment or return of the manuals. neither happened.

i posted up the list of deficiencies to WARN anyone that was looking to purchase this particular unit down the road from this buyer to MAKE SURE THESE ITEMS HAVE BEEN ADDRESSED before paying a huge investment into a veneer truck.
I STRONGLY advise that if you come across this thread before purchasing to have an independent individual to inspect the truck.

Can't even pay for manuals but can invest in a truck? :meh:
