Made a Puma mount for Inkpot's rig. Bolts into the stock 3rd row bolt holes.:hillbilly:

I wouldn't mount any compressor under the hood. My biggest concern is heat, it reduces performance and life. Just finished a mount to hold it over the wheel well.

I mounted my DC5000 under the hood which I believe is similar to the PUMA. I understand that heat kills, but for myself keeping the rear free of stuff was more important. I'll only be using my compressor to inflate tires, therefore no air tank, PS etc. and no pressure above 35 psi. For pics of the install see post#4 in the link below.

What was the final decision on wire size? Any other stumbling blocks?

Thanks, Pat

Mine has a bunch of run time, is performing great on the 6 gauge. IIRC the wire run is only ~12', so within spec on wiring charts for the amp draw. Even after a long run, the wire isn't even slightly warm.

Everything is a compromise, so often have to do what you have to do to achieve the goal. By mounting under the hood, when started, the compressor will already be at the top end of it's operating temp range and will get hotter as it runs, so will never deliver close to it's potential capacity. As long as it delivers what you need, :meh:. :hillbilly:

I am curious to know why you say the compressor will never deliver close to it's capacity.

Air expands with temp rise, hotter air is less dense than cooler air. Pumping heats air, but the hotter the unit and the intake air is, the smaller the resulting pressure/volume will be once the air is cooled to normal temp. In other words, the hotter the unit and the intake air is the lower the efficiency.

Looking at the flir test in the link. That pump doesn't do the best job at cooling, somewhat common with small compressors. The test starts at 66F (assuming that is ambient and intake air temp for the test), after the 10min run the pump temp is 275F. Now mount it under the hood, assuming that most will use it after wheeling, so very hot under the hood, depending on ambient temp, the radiator fan is blowing 130-180F air on it, the exhaust is radiating even hotter into it. Lets say the starting temp for the unit is 180F, what would the ending temp be?

I may have missed it... what size fuse are you using on this little Puma?

Mine has an 80amp, 60amp would work fine.

What are the dimensions of the silver compressor by itself? I want to separate the compressor from the tank and I have a space in mind but the dimension of the pump is critical.

The DC 5000 which is essentially the same as the PUMA is 8" high, 10.75" long and 7.5" wide.

Who has the best deal on those PUMA compressors with the tank? I almost picked one up a couple years ago on ebay but last time I checked they were kinda hard to find.

Mine is in kind of a difficult spot to measure, ~6"W, 9.5"T, 12"L. One thing to keep in mind, good cooling is critical, so room needs to be provided for air circulation around it, if not, a fan maybe needed.

Most of them have come from Buzzard Gulch Tools Homepage ether direct or ebay. Sometimes they have them on ebay, sometimes not.

Thanks Tools R Us. The Buzzard Gulch Tools website is pretty crazy... If anyone is looking for the Puma Compressors they are on page 104 of their "online catalog".

Thanks for the dimensions Tools R Us, that information is extremely difficult to find on the internet. I think that the dimensions will work well for where I want to locate it.
