Propane?

As an interesting note, I found a 1972 Mother Earth News article on converting to lpg. The total cost then was about $100.00. The regulator was the most expensive part at about $35.00. The guy who wrote the article did his VW bus. He gave complete instructions.

no, it needs the carb butterflies for regulation..

Best carburetor to run on sbc for propane .The gas carb part of dual fuel.I have setup that runs two propane carbs on top of gas carb.

Thanks Matt your a legend, those pics were just what i was after. I know its basic but it really helps to see these things somtimes. Thanks again mate.
Justin i live in Port Douglas if you want to catch up drop me a line.
Here's some pics of my set up so far.

No air restrictor with my set up it really is that simple.

Their is a DYNO print out on page one of the 2F-ETI build thread see link in sig

Propane is great, cheap, only draw back is Range but I run Dual fuel so 80Ltrs Propane and 80Ltrs Gas is my max load. 80Ltrs=21Gal approx

Propane/Gas Switch and Propane gauge below

What is your range? I get about 60 litres in the LPG tank, thats good for about 200k on the road if I nurse it along easy.. Off road, not so good.

WHat is the black thing and what is that cable hooks to it?

Over complicated :D I think its a mixer, cable will run a block of plate.

I get around 300k's on a tank (usable80Ltrs out of a 100Ltr tank) min but my engine was built and cammed for Propane.

Marshall this is a very common conversion in Colombia SA and was ready to do it on my cruiser but checked the price on propane and it is not that different from gas. At least here in NC. Is propane significantly cheaper in SC?
2.50 -2.75 a gallon.

This may have been mentioned but some of the issue is trying to do both... Seems hard to have your cake and eat it too. Timing is an issue. See below.

My biggest thing on my Troopy is that someone's drunk uncle wired my rig a couple of owners ago. So, when a wire shorted out. I was dead in the water. The relay was left open to only run propane and not gasoline and so I could run neither. This is scary when you look at my wiring ...lol. I need to redo it a little at a time. I'll prolly take the system out and put it in the trail truck anyway. That "bomb" hanging low is merely a rock catcher... :D

There's some confusion on the way it is run...the thing to remember, is that if you Really want the benifit of propane (and IT DOESN'T WORK ON FUEL INJECTED RIGS...just carbs BTW), you have to advance your timing big time and leave it there and get your higher comp. pistons too I'd say...but if you run it and switch back and forth to gasoline, then you have to leave your timing and all that alone....else it'll knock like crazy when you switch to gas...

Interesting fact: the FJ40 that won the Baja race in '74 was mostly stock, but ran PROPANE.

Propane Injection is a totally different thing...that's using it to make diesel engines burn cleaner and more completely...(less black smoke when you floor it!)\
Anyway, the benefits are there...pro's and con's to everything...

....

Some of you folks know my rig and it's a chevy big block 396cid running on propane. Probably the best mod for the money I ever did for a trail rig that won't see much (if any) road time. Tobascolo (and others) are right...major timing advance to work with that est. 110 octane. Higher compression would help boost power as well but isn't really "necessary". Fuel economy on my rig is just about the same on bbq gas as it was on pump gas - both sucked at about 7-8 for propane and about 8-9 for gas. Other big factor is that I can fill my tanks at home for less than $2 per gallon vs the price of pump gas these days. For a rig that is going to spend most of it's life on the street I wouldn't be able to strongly suggest it. For a rig that is going to see a lot of trail time - go for it!

My rig, under the hood and the freaking wire mess!:

Good luck!

Be happy to help you out in any way that I could or you see fit.

compared with 87 octane prices now. the difference is about $35 cents a gallon now. Assuming the conversion will cost you around $1000 or so you will have to run about 3,000 gallons of fuel to break even.

For the coolness factor I guess it is fine but really not much of an investment if you ask me.

Propane here is around 50c a Ltr Aus

Gas is 1.40Ltr Aus

Government rebate for switching to Propane $2000Aus in your pocket cost to switch new around $2400 Aus

All good here:bounce:

PS my gas ring is on it's way to Florida I think, someone was smart enough to realize it will soon be obsolete:D

If you're still running carb think this way:

All the benefits of an injection system - smooth running down to almost 100rpm, smooth pickup, and will run on almost any angle without flooding or starving (including upside down!)
