Just got around to testing the alternator diodes. It looks like that is my culprit, but I am also a little suspicious of these spal fans pulling current when everything should be powered off.
Not sure how the fans would be drawing anything if not running what's controlling them?

So they're the brushless spals and are supposed to be wired to get 12v constant and are turned on / speed is controlled by a single wire delivering the pulse width modulated (PWM) signal from the ECU. I think there are some internal components that operate as a relay and it looks like they also have some sort of capacitor built into them. When I I hook up an ammeter between the fan and positive post of the battery it shows the fans pulling current but quickly tapering off (charging capcitor?) and I get similar feedback with a test light (lights up kinda bright and then drops off). I'm not sure if this is enough of a draw to be my problem though -- hence right now only suspicious of them.

3 / n:

Tow Mode: There seems to be a dearth of 80 Series style aftermarket switches out there (if you know any more please let me know). You'll want a momentary (on) / off switch. Air On Board sells a few flavors of 80s switches though nothing blank. I got one marked for a garage door and some stickers to cover over "Garage Door".
Tap Shift: I ordered a 3D printed switch plate with a cutout for a USB A cable from Solve Function (I did not realize, I'd actually get the USB A cable as well - will figure out something to do with it) and trying to find the right size momentary (on) off (on) switch from Digikey that will fit into the cut out. The plan here is to put this tap shift button where the OD / 2nd buttons used to be on the shifter console (or maybe somewhere else if that turns out to be less than ideal).
Cruise Control: I bought a Rostra cruise control kit from www.thecruisecontrolstore.com. I got a universal RH side stalk and the “Cruise Control for GM LS Drive by Wire ETC Engines.” The kit is relatively easy to install, but note that there is a bit of a missing step in the instructions to mate the stalk to the control unit. From the stalk wires to the CCU connector, Green = pin 1 / Set; Yellow = pin 2 / Res; Brown = pin 3 / On-Off; Red & Blue = pin 6 12v; Black = pin 8 GND. The truck pedal I ordered from Mitch appears to be the right match to the pedal interface plugs of the Rostra kit. I'll also connect the On-Off wire to the “Cruise” light in the combination meter and there are a bunch of other wires you’ve got to tap to make it all work.
With some finessing, the universal stalk and its wire / mounting nuts will fit into the little plastic mounting box for the Toyota stalk and is totally unobtrusive on the column.
Note: I am going to use Mitch's MCM speedo lead to feed this CCU vehicle speed, but I'm just running the combination meter VSS off the transfer case for the speedo on the dashboard.

Very helpful thread! Which exact CC lever did you use? Do you have a part number?
Also curious to see if you figured out your Tow/Haul and Tap shift buttons.

@RICVirginiaHJ61 hows this project coming along? I’m in Charlottesville and would love to check it out at some point. Lend a hand if I could.

I don't have the CC figured out yet and don't want to steer you wrong. I emailed with a guy from www.thecruisecontrolstore.com though and they seemed very knowledgeable / helpful as to matching your set up to one of their rostra kits.

The swap and like 90% of the mechanical & electrical work is done. It's on pause at the moment though as I've got nearly the entire interior ripped out and exterior stripped down before it goes to a body shop for some rust repair and a fresh coat of paint. That was supposed to get started around now, but it's going to be a couple more months while I wait on this guy to finish his current project Bronco for another customer. I suppose I could put some of the necessities back together and get it on the road, but doing work that I know I'm imminently going to un-do (while there are projects / maintenance to be done on my other truck) doesn't get me fired up to do it.

I think the project and this thread will come alive again probably early summer when I get the truck back after the bodywork and reassemble the inside/outside / tune the engine / fix the P/N switch in the transmission / get fresh tires / charge the AC and get it truly on the road.

So… this project has stalled in a major way, i’ve bought a chevy to tow my 60 series out west and elsewhere, and have some rather big stuff to fix on the 60. Do the folks following this long running / going nowhere thread think there’d be any interest in buying this as a well equipped (but not finished) project in a box?

Highlights: 6.2L gen V, 10l80 trans, torfab adapter kit, cable shifter install (but not perfect yet), unlocked ecu, engine swap, wiring 95pct done, wiring harness and MCM from swaptime, toyota harness trimmed down, rcv front axles, rebuilt front and rear axles, reupholstered interior trim pieces and headliner (not installed), car play headunit, speakers, woofer, backup cam, tar deadener out - lizard skin in, new OME springs and shocks, all suspension bushings replaced, manafre radial arm drop downs, hydroboost braking, wilwood cylinder, abs delete, new calipers / rotors / pads all around, prof reupholstered 2 tone leather seats and armrests etc (Mosley), front seat gear replaced, bicycle tire trick in sunroof gasket, new sunroof plastic painted to match, high pressure fuel pump and new AN lines, new spark plugs, new fuel rails, 4 decent lx450 wheels in boxes, brand new unpainted fender flares, brand new back corner bumpers, dry frame cut to replace rusted rear cross member (not installed), repaired wheel well rust outs, cleaned and sturdied and cleaned up door cards, cleaned all plastic pieces and lots of tabs, new Specter carpet kit, weathertec mats, new yellowtop battery, new rubber gaskets and weatherstripping for everything, new radiator, torfab airbox, torfab fan shroud and pwm spal fans, dry ice blast on undercarriage and decent paint blasted everywhere underneath, new body mounts, new body moulding (but not 40th anniversary), self tinted sombrero and other logos (came out good!), new grille

The bad: rusted dogleg (have a cut to weld in), rusted quarter panel buckets — one patched with fiberglass and one with cuts to weld in, rusted out rear member (with new dry cut to weld in), s***ty paint, cracked front windshield, park/neutral pawl busted (circuit jumped for now and new switch on the shelf), hasn’t really been road tested, my welded patches in the wheel wells

Not decided either way, but…

Glad to hear you’re making progress again! I’m still stalled myself and walk by the truck every day wishing I’d reignite it.
Took a little coaxing to get it started again after sitting so long! I had it running last week in anticipation of this guy coming and -- of course -- couldn't start it without banging around on the starter, replacing battery with a spare, etc.
