Project: Stock Front Bumper with Integrated Winch

I have done this before to my white 8o with the same winch you have using a TJ winch mounting plate. I will be doing this soon to my LX overland project using a Mile Marker 8000 lb. winch. The previous setup included a hawse fairlead with as small of a hole cut into the factory bumper as possible. This time, I will cut a larger hole the size of the licence plate and use a roller fairlead. I can post pics of the former setup but do not want to spoil your thread.

Let's see it.

Looks great :)

I did the same with mine, but used a roller fairlead instead (see SuperWinch link in sig)

Do you plan on switching to synthetic line?

Rick

More than likely not, as I have no guarantee this thing will work more than a few times, given the fact that most people have negative comments about it's performance (or the name?).

If anything will be upgraded, it may be the winch itself. ;)

Your thread was a good read. I especially like the fact that we both had the same idea; it came naturally to want to mount the winch upside-down, but then I had the same thought you did - no protection.

Really clean install and excellent way to add functionality, Rick!

I just may go with a roller fairlead later, but I want this to be tested as-is: this project only cost one 7" metal-cutting Skill Saw blade, so I will let this project remain as a no-cost build.

But, I just might build a front bumper soon.

What did you use to trim the fairlead? And do you have any more measurements??

I didn't trim the fairlead, that is how I received it. If you are referring to the area where the fairlead is exposed, I used a Skillsaw and 1/8" cutoff wheels.

I can take any measurements you are looking for; which are you interested in?

oh, I meant the winch mount (which the fairlead is mounted to). The steel plate looks fairly thick did you do that the same way?
And the dimensions for the cuts in the bumper, as well as the dimensions for the plate, would be great!

Harbor Freight, $39.99. The plate I have is 1/4", not sure if the plate they are selling is the same, but it is heavy duty.

So the universal winch holder was only 40 bucks. Wow. Sounds like a steal. Speakin of steals, im takin this idea. Awesome looking.. Cheaper then a bumper. lol.

Picked me up a mount from harbor freight for 40 dollars and stole your idea. Used a 9000lb winch from pathfinder recovery gear and with a little grinding of the grill bracket was able to push it far enough back to only trim just around the fairlead. Turned out great, thanks for the idea.

I still am convinced that this is an inexpensive and effective means by which to mount a winch to these vehicles, and it's great to see people take advantage of it.

I have a factory bumper that had a winch in it and the cover if anyone is looking for one. It would just cost shipping if neccessary.

I really like this! Budget depending I may go for this.

 Anybody know if a Warn XP9.5 would fit? It fits in my tacoma ARB so I guess it should. might do this after the lift.

Sorry for the bump, but I am not seeing the winch plate on HF's website. Did you guys just go get it from the brick and motar store?

It would appear as though HF no longer carries it. But, for DIY, one could have a plate cut to the desired dimensions (something I had to do anyway), and have a fairlead mount welded onto the front to achieve the desired end result. I would have done just this with the skills and welder that I now have.

Or, just buy one from somewhere else -- but not at $40, it seems.

Doesn't look like it, but when you bought the plate, did they have it listed on the website? I'm figuring to still go to a B&M to see if they may have it in stock. This eBay link shows the same winch plate in design, although I am not sure if the HF one is also 36" wide. It has the correct mounting pattern for a warn/smittybilt.

Unfortunately I do not have the tools to weld, but I do have the tools to cut. I will be tackling this job soon and will post in this thread. It sure has helped me out a lot, so I am more than happy to return the favor. Also, in the 9 or so months you've had this installed, any issues with this mounting solution?
