Stage Three Continues - Drawers

My buddy Dave is a fellow 200 Series owner and recently installed a set of Outback Drawers in his 200. He had actually purchased them along with a 100 Series fit kit for his UZJ100 but it went on to a new home before he mounted the drawers so he mounted them into the 200. At the time there wasn't a 200 specific fit kit here in the US so he used the already purchased 100 fit kit and cleanly modified it to fit the slightly different side profile of the 200. His install was super tidy but he was still curious about the 200 fit kit, just curious enough to help me install my drawers this evening.

The install went pretty smooth. We've installed a handful of drawer kits in the shop and Dave did his not to long ago so most of it was pretty familiar to us. We varied a bit from the instructions. They have you assembled the two drawer frames outside of the vehicle and then install together. However not only are you dealing with a bulky frame, it's a VERY tight fit in the 200's and I found it easier to install on side with the bolts loosely started and then install the second. With both loosely fitted we can them mount them together and true them up. It worked perfectly and we had it finished up in just about 3 hours total including some vacuuming/cleaning before hand and some BS time through the middle. I've got a couple of things to work on back there yet to come including 12V/USB outlets and mounting/wiring the fridge. I need to spend some time laying out my electrical wants needs for the entire vehicle so I can knock it all out at once rather than have wires heading every direction twice. I'll save that for another day.

I've gone on and on about how much I've enjoyed the drawers in the 100 Series over the years, so I'll save you my diatribe tonight :D

Man, I wish you would write the installation manual for ARB...except in ENGLISH!! :) If it's how it was back when I installed them in my 100...you can barely understand their wording! :)

Question for ya...
Are your the 41" units (as opposed to 37")?
If so...any chance you could take internal drawer measurements for maximum height/width/depth?
I've looked all over and they don't list INTERNALS.

I know I'm installing the same drawers before long, but it would help me choose a few things I don't want to wait on if I knew the maximums.

Would also love to see if the 2nd row folds down as close to flush with the drawers as my 100 series did...as it makes a great sleeping surface if it's as flush/level.

Thanks for the continued build posts! Enjoying watching you guys work!

Dickie Seats (Jump Seats)
Swarf (drilling debris)
Prise (Pry off?)

The instructions seemed to have improved over the years. I know when I put them in my 100 Series it took 5 guys what seemed like 8 hours. Of course it takes 5 guys 8 hours to agree how to rotate a tire too :D We've since done full 100 Series installs in under 2 hours here in the shop with two guys that have done multiple sets. I think we could do a 200 even quicker as the drawer bottom hat's are all set in the correct locations and rear Dickie seats come out with 6 bolts.

Yes, the RD1045. 41x21x11". I'll acutally measure the ID's in the 100 tomorrow as it has the RD1045 and a RD1045 which has a slightly lower inside height due to the roller top floor. Might be better info to offer plus I need to clean it out... from Baja last month

They absolutely do and I plan to sleep there too! Dave (local customer, racemate and pal) has spent a month worth of nights sleeping on his drawers (200 with one RD1045 and a shorter drawer on the left), works great. I've slept 100+ nights in my 100 setup, absolutely love it.

Thanks!
Great!
Thanks. I thought the roller top had the same ID...but perhaps not?
Anyway...I'll look forward to those measurements.

Thanks again!

Same exterior dimensions but as the top deck (roller floor) mechanism has t0 fit in there, you have a bit less usable room in the drawer. The boxes themselves are likely the same, I can't recall (will measure) but you can stack the RD1045 a bit taller than the drawer (perhaps 1") without worry but the RDRF you don't have much room above the drawer sides or you'll snag opening and closing either the drawer or the floor. Clear as Mud?

Funny you say that. When I was about to install my 100 series ARB drawers, I enlisted my bro in law to help because he installs kitchens for a living. He looked at the instructions for a minute and basically said ya that's not going to help. He went out to the garage by himself and assembled the drawers and installed them in the truck in about 3 hours and did a flawless job (he also lifted the built assembly alone - it pays to have a guy who is a 6'3" 250 pound hockey player as a bro in law!). I honestly would have paid a shop to do it after I looked at the instructions, so you are totally right - they need improvement if they haven't already.

That's funny as I'm the same size as you bro in law at 6'3", 245. I installed the full setup by myself about 8 years ago... Maybe you have to be 6-3 and up? Hehe

As for the instructions...."CRIKEY" that Ausie wording is interesting! ;)

They probably think we talk funny too though...

Ha, that is awesome.

Kurt, if its not too late, I'd love a detailed post on your diff breather install.

Yeah, the rear is a piece of cake, but I have heard that the front and center breathers can be hard to access. I'd like to see someone else do it before I try it too.

Will do. I plan to knock that out before we install the skid plate system.

Are you fabbing skids or are you going with ARB? I can't seem to find another company that offers a full skid set for the 200.

I have the ARB skid plate system laying in wait

I did and I'm still torn on whether or not I should have gone that route. You running them?

Hey Kurt,

Could you describe a bit more of your thoughts and why you feel torn? I've found your description of your thought process most helpful here, and I'm very interested in your hindsight on tires, etc. I'm wishing for 34's on my 200...and probably would have done that if I had lifted my truck. Unfortunately, I could not wait on tires (unsafely worn) so went pretty conservative with 285/70/17 KO2's...which are really only about 32.6. To me, 34's seem like a good balance without getting into 35's...and really feeling the need for a gear swap.

What do you think?
